    Huge problem

My younger sibling recently deleted the " ULi Chipset Driver," from my PC.

My computer no longer even gets on to the desktop and just continues to restart itself.

The file was removed from the control panel and I have no idea what to do to get my PC working again!

Any help would be greatly appreciated !!!

What is the make and model of the computer?

If custom built what is the make and model of the motherboard?

Do you have a driver CD for the motherboard?

Do you have a Microsoft XP CD or an OEM XP CD?

My PC was custom built, it is not made by Dell or Emachines etc, I think that's what you mean.

I have a CD which I think is for the motherboard, it says:

    ASUS
    P5RD1-V Deluxe
ATi Radeon Xpress 200 Support CD Rev.113.01

(all written on the front of the CD)

In smaller writing on the CD it also says: " This CD runs automatically if Autorun is enabled. Otherwise run ASSETUP.EXE from the BIN folder. "

In a small green box on the CD it says " M539," maybe the name of the driver...

I do not have any Microsoft XP CDs.

Thanks for your reply !!! I hope we can solve this soon !!

    Enter: Motherboard > Socket 775 > P5RD1-V Deluxe

    Utilities

    WinXP

    Version 6.2.0.3 2005/04/02 update

Description ULi Chipset Driver V6.2.0.3 for Windows 2000/XP(WHQL)/2003.

This is probably already on your disk.

Usually you install XP first but you might try inserting this CD during the BIOS POST just to see what happens.

Otherwise you will need to locate your XP CD and reload XP first. Did you just misplace your XP CD or what?

About the only other option is to run ASSETUP.EXE from the BIN folder from the Recovery Console accessed via 6 floppy boot disks: How to obtain Windows XP Setup boot disks

This is just a long shot.

I checked the contents of my motherboard CD and you're right, that driver is already on the disk.

I tried inserting the motherboard CD during bootup and this is what appears on the screen:

    Loading FreeDOS FAT KERNEL GO!
Press any key to boot from CDROM

...then I pressed a key and after several screens passed by it comes up with:

    1) Make ULi SATA 32bit Driver Disk
    2) Format Floppy disk
    3) FreeDOS command prompt
    Please choose 1 - 3:

...so I formatted a floppy disk, made the 32bit driver disk and then tried the 3rd option:

    Welcome to FreeDOS (http://www.freedos.org)!
    A:\>

...and that is as far as I've got, I have no idea what this means or what to type at this prompt.

As for the Windows XP CD, I have never bought one and it did not come with my PC.

I will await a reply before I do anything else because I do not know how to do the last bit you suggested.

    Thanks jephree !

How did XP get installed on your computer?

If you do not have a licensed copy we cannot help you here.

About your only option without an XP CD is try the DOS prompt. The idea would be to run ASSETUP.EXE from the BIN folder. See if you can find this on the CD. If so see if you can copy this to a floppy. If so you might try running this at the DOS prompt.

Windows XP was already installed on my PC when I got it and it did not come with a CD.
It is a licensed copy, I have not done anything illegal !
There is a Certificate of Authenticity sticker for Windows XP Professional on the top of my PC with a product key, which I had to register to activate windows.

I checked the contents of the motherboard CD again and looked in the "BIN," folder. There is an application in the folder called "Assetup." There is no file actually called ASSETUP.EXE.

Is there something I should type at the A:\> prompt ?

The problem with copying files to a floppy is that this PC (my brothers) does not have a floppy disk drive, although mine does. Would you suggest taking mine out and connecting it to this PC temporarily ? In this case would I need to download anything to make it recognise the floppy drive ?

As you undoubtedly can see, my technical knowledge of computers is poor so as much detail as possible would be very helpful.

Thanks very much for your time and patience.

Do you know who built your computer? If so I would ask them for an XP CD (at least just to borrow it). Since you have the Product Key all you need is any CD that matches your installation e.g. XP Home or XP Home SP1 or SP2 or XP Pro or XP Pro SP1 or SP2 etc.

Perhaps a friend of yours' has one. As long as you have your key any CD (matching your version of XP will work).

I would assume that the builder had a volume version XP to install but still he/she should be responsible for a backup.

Otherwise you will need a floppy drive on the affected computer. There is nothing required but to plug it in.

I would again suggest first of all to see if we can get into the Recovery Console with the Microsoft 6 floppy boot disks:

Right, I have contacted the manufacturer and asked for them to send a windows XP CD.

What do I do with it when I get it ? How can that CD retrieve the deleted Chipset Drivers ??!

Also, as a last resort, would you suggest I use a Recovery CD ( think I've got one somewhere ) ? Would this help in any way?

I tried putting my floppy disk drive into my brothers PC to make the 6 boot disks but his PC did not recognise the hardware. I am sure it was connected properly too but it just wouldn't work.

Thanks, I hope I hear from you soon.
