Had this problem for quite awhile, never found help. Most of the time when I try to download software it is saved as a .lwp file (unusable) tried changing file type but still a lwp. file. If you can help, thanks Mickey
.lwp files are Lotus Wordpro files.
Some info on altering file types here:

Can you give an example of a download? Also how have you tried to change the file type? Can you directly Run downloads (rather than Save)?
start > Control Panel > Folder Options > File Types ?
Also if you use Lotus Wordpro there might be some internal settings there.
No I don't have lotus installed.Example, when I try to download spy sherrif or any 7 other programs if I leave it as run it will open in acrobat (with jibberish) if I tell it to save to disk it will save with a lwp ext, have tried to change ext type in download manager but it will still save as .lwp
Thanks
Just for testing can you post a direct link to a download and or website containing the download?
http://www.spywareremove.com/removeSpy_Sherrif.htmlSpySheriff is a system hijacker that secretly installs to victim PCs. SpySheriff causes the desktop to change and display a fake warning message that tricks users into installing the antispyware software (SpySheriff).
As a first response you might want to post a HijackThis log for review by our Pros in that section:
Please follow the instructions HERE & then post your log in a new thread in the Spyware, Adware, Viruses and HijackThis Logs section.
(Not in this section please).
Please specify what issues you appear to be experiencing along with your log.

sorry not spy sherif, windows beta defender.
That download works fine for me. It comes as an .msi
What results do you get when you place .lwp into start > Search > All Files and Folders
Also in Search choose More Advanced Options and choose Hidden files and System files.
Also look in start > Control Panel > Folder Options > File Types
For any .lwp extension.
Also you might want to go ahead and run a HijackThis log by our Pros over in that section as noted above.
Better example, tried to download hijack and spybot from this website and it's saved as this (hijackthis.exe.lwp)
Mickey
And you cannot change this (rename) removing .lwp?
If not I would download HijackThis on another computer then put it on a floppy and run it on this affected one. You can transfer the log back out on another floppy.
I see no precedent to your issue which raises the virus/malware suspicion even higher.
