    partition/boot problem

I have two hard disks. c: and d: and windows is installed on C:
Last night I tryed to split d: into 2 partitions... I did this and it seemed to all be ok... until i restarted. It now will not boot up and gives me "error 1 loading os" with 4 options, none of which i can even select. I can only restart. I have tryed using bootcfg in recovery console and still does not work. Last night in boot cfg it would find my installation on windows on c: and the new installation on the new partition of d:. Now it onli finds the new installation??

    help please!!!

    thanks alot

Just to clarify: you loaded a second XP on D? If so: why?

Check your boot menu in the BIOS and verify that the C drive is set to boot and the D etc. is not.

lol installed windows media center edition on the second.. :P stupid i know but anyway..
    heres wat i did.

i tryed partitioning first... worked fine. (before installing MCE)

rebooted to find it was screwed and i couldnt boot.

so i tryed booting the MCE disk and installing that. It is on 2 disks. When disk one was finished i put in disk 2 and it had to restart. But when it restarted i got to the same "error 1 loading os" and once the cd booted again the setup did not continue.

so im stuck wth a half installed os.

and no way of getting to my original xp... which i dont even know if it still exsists.

These are two different physical hard drives: yes?

If so verify in the BIOS Setup that the old XP drive is set to boot and the other is not.

If this still will not boot back into XP then try physically disconnecting the second hard drive to verify that the original is intact.

    yes 2 physical hard drives.

In bios menu i go to boot menu yes?

When i am there it has 1st 2nd 3rd boot option etc..

first is cd drive, then floppy, and then ide-hdd

armd-hdd and armd-fdd are not selected to boot at all.

how do i tell which drive is which?

IDE-HDD is what you want. armd-hdd and armd-fdd are removable drives if you should have them.

If you click on IDE-HDD you should see both of your hard drives. You need to select the old original XP drive to boot.

They should be identified by manufacturer and size.

As a test: if X is currently selected change it to Y. (X & Y only used as symbols by me).

also just tryed disconnecting second hard drive.

I still get the same message when i try to boot"

"Error 1 loading OS. This may be due to a virus."

And i havent even touched this drive :S.

Im trying different stuff and i may be on to something.

When i am in recovery console how do i remove entries from my boot options?

because i have several different entries all for the same windows version.

If you are certain that this drive is listed in the BIOS to boot and it is throwing that error then do you have a full XP CD to boot?

If so first try the Recover Console and there try fixboot

As to your last post this is mine (for example):

    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

    In more detail if needed:

If you cannot boot into any aspect of Safe Mode options then you will need a boot disk.

If you have a retail versin of XP CD then:

If you cannot boot into Windows I would suggest first trying the Recovery Console:

    http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;307654

To try to fix the boot:

Assuming that your XP is on C: then:

    Type:

    FIXMBR C:

then enter. After that completes type:

    FIXBOOT C:

then enter. After that completes type:

    BOOTCFG /rebuild

then enter. After that completes type:

    EXIT

    then reboot.

If in the process you are asked to run chkdsk say YES.

Also after the BOOTCFG /rebuild you will be prompted to:

    C:\Windows
    1. Add installation to boot list? (Yes/No/All):
    2. Enter Load Identifier: (Custom description for an operating system loading from the Boot menu)
    3. Enter Operating System Load Options: (that is: /fastdetect)

    Reply:
    1. Yes
    2. XP
    3. /fastdetect

If this fails you can run a Repair Install that will leave your data intact:

    http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

If your XP was OEM (pre installed) you will need to check with your manufacturer or manual for their specific Recovery Options.

Do you have Recovery CDs? What is the exact make and model of the computer? The manufacturer's web site will have their process.

thanks for your help so far..

i tried the stuff you said and im starting to think there is a problem with my harddisk.
i ran checkdisk and it finished instantly saying that there was only 10444kb total disk space. and that there was unrecoverable parts.

It also said the file system is fat32.. when i know it was ntfs. :s

Am i screwed? Id prefer not to lose my data from c:
