System32/hal.dll file is corrupt or missing... HELP?!? >_<

Hello. Tried to open my computer today, and this error came up saying that system32/hal.dll is corrupt/missing and to replace it. Yeah... I'm computer illiterate besides the functions I need to use everyday...

I have a *reads the stickers on computer*
    Emachines
    AMD 64 Atholon
    2.20 GHz
    1600 MHz FSB
    512 KB L2 Cache
    200 GB ATA Hardrive

No clue what any of that means... megabytes gigahertz?? I don't get it, but I hope some of you do so I can get back on my PC.

It was bought this year *NEW* so I am ticked that this is happening. The only thing I can think of is Limeware? Maybe this did it? Who knows... but I am leaving July 10th and I need to have it fixed before then and I can't lose my data.... someone please help ASAP! Iam stuck on a friends laptop... >_<

Oh- it worked once, and I went on and uninstalled Norton something and it won't let me back on again...

What is the exact eMachine model series and number? Do you have the manual?

Do you have Recovery Disks? Did you buy this locally? Is there someplace local to take it for a warranty service?

The error is fairly generic and basically requires Recovery CD's.

    Norton was/is your Anti-Virus.

Try booting into Safe Mode by repeatedly tapping the F8 key after your BIOS POST but before Windows starts.

Let us know if you can access Safe Mode.

    Model- t6412
    s/n-gry58 100 10797

    I have the manual

I have the recovery disk- will running this destroy my data? o_O

I bought it locally, and I assume we have a warranty as it was bought this year

I'm trying the safe-mode thing now... chose the OS as winXP lets see... black screen and nope cannot access because of hal.dll

Do you get the Safe Mode Option screen?

    If so choose:

    Last Known Good Configuration

eMachine is very un-user friendly online

Your error is described here: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_h.htm

There should be an easy fix using your Recovery CD but eMachine is no help online. Sorry

You might want to contact them or read your manual as to a NON-destructive Recovery or else the means to access the Recovery Console where you can follow Kelly's advice.

Or you can can just take it in and use your warranty.

That is an ISO file. You would need an ISO recorder and CD burner is all.

    Free one here:

By this I am assuming that your Recovery CD's are not bootable?

Microsoft has floppies that will get you to the Recovery Console: How to obtain Windows XP Setup boot disks

Again ii might be the most expedient to check with your local dealer.
