Is this a new problem? Were things working OK previously? Why did you re-format? What problems were you having? Have you reloaded SP2?

Also: look in your Event viewer: rt. click My Computer then click Manage then Event Viewer.
Or: Administrative Tools/Event Viewer or Start/Run/ eventvwr
Open the system as well as the application tabs & look for X errors. Click error line for details.
Post back the source & event id & Description especially of errors that seem to coincide with this issue.
Also check the Information lines that might coincide with this issue.

How to view and manage event logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP

I re-formatted my comp b/c there was very little space left on c drive (50mb). The xp home disk I have has SP2 already on it. The computer had this problem before I formatted it. I have a 250gb hard drive partitioned into 4 drives and all I did was format the 1 partition do u think I should format the whole drive?

I looked at the event viewer things and there was one X and it was for wmp11. There were also a bunch of "!" but no other X. in the system there was nothing but a few "!"

    Thanks

I personally prefer to leave a hard drive as a single partition but that's me.

I'm wondering if your problem might be related to Page File as XP uses your hard drive for additional Memory via the Page File.

    Check your Page File Size:

Right click My Computer then click Properties

    Advanced > Performance > Settings > Advanced > Virtual memory > Change

Is this set to System Manage Size?

One thing you can test here is to turn off Page File which will send everything to your RAM proper but this is just a test as doing so will also stop all error reporting as this is dumped in the Page File.

You can also move your Page File to another partition as seen in the link below.

If your only problems are with games then the Graphics Card/Driver is the primary suspect.

Have you removed all graphics drivers and uninstalled the card via the Device Manager before rebooting and reloading the latest drivers?

After running some games for a while (GTA SA, S.W.A.T 4, and BF2) my comp will run for bout 30mins then the sound messes up (repeats one part over and over and over again). I am able to shut off the game but still locks up on desktop. Is there anything else that I could try? It’s been getting better with all of the little things we do but still locks up ~ARG~. It never used to do this. Also how might I go about over clocking my CPU (AMD Athlon XP 2800+) (I’m only going to over clock once I get this computer working correctly.)

    Thanks

You say: It never used to do this. But you also said earlier: The computer had this problem before I formatted it.

If it is not a heat issue then Memory or Page File again makes me wonder.

Did you try to test turning the Page File Off?

Your symptoms appear to me to be hardware rather than software.

And most BIOS in the Setup have the option to set and alter the clock speeds.

When I say it never used to do this I meant it never did it when I installed the video card and memory (Christmas)
“Did you try to test turning the Page File Off?”
I haven’t tried this yet but if this works should I leave it off?
If it’s more hardware what should it do?

    Thanks
    Matt
