Is this a new problem? Happen all the sudden? Have you installed any new software?
Do you run Disk Cleanup & Disk Defragmentor?
    (start > all programs > accessories > system tools > disk ...)

    sorry for delay in replying.
This is a new problem, have not installed any new software, regularrly defrag and run clean up.
this now happens everytime i boot up and takes about 5 minutes before all programs suddenly open together.
I have norton utilities which detects no problems,i have ad-aware/spybot and they are clear.I have tried disabling the firewall and av but makes no difference.the only thing that ties in with this happening is on start up i get a box saying that msn is not installed properly but it is,can i get rid of this box somehow?
    any help most appreciated
    thanks

I have the same problem 2...but doesnt happen very often. It has something to do with to many service running i think. No newly installed software. The best way to try and lessen the problem is by running Ad Aware 6. It helps, but doesnt solve the prob completely. Try using Stinger from McAfee too. it sometime detects viruses that even Norton Antivirus 2003 can't detect. You r using XP Pro?

I would suggest downloading and running HiJack This.

If nothing else you will get a detailed list of whats starting up on your machine.

If you sence deeper trouble post your log in the Spyware, Adware and Viruses section for reading.

    HiJack This

sorry you still have problems with the machine and the "pass the blamers".

i have no awnsers only a few finds i've found searching. i will just post what i've found tho i dont know much about the content personaly:

"Sounds like a problem with your network settings? Do you have any
Local Area Connections set up? Do you have them set to DHCP? If so,
you need to change it to a static IP address e.g. 10.0.0.1 etc."

"Run msconfig go to services and uncheck Background Intelligent
Transfer Service. Let me know if it works."

"If you're running a DSL modem and have a Lan or high speed connection, try
    changing the properties of it.
Go to start> connect to> show all connections>right click on Local Area
connection>scroll down and click on Properties.
    Highlight "Internet protocol (TCP/IP)"
Click on properties button>click on the "use the following IP address" radio
    button.
    Add the following.
IP address:192.168.0.1 (or any in the accepted range)
    Subnet Mask:255.255.255.0
Some connections won't allow this, so if you can't get a connection, remove
    it."

"I put in my XP cd, double clicked SETUP.EXE and followed the Upgrade path.
After about 35 mins, my system was fully restored, complete with desktop,
customisations, and all programs intact and working.
Plus: No more freeze at startup! Yippee!"

"Do you have a DSL or cable hookup?
It could be looking for a network that it can't find until it times out.
This is why it takes so long.
Go to the properties of your Broadband or Local area connection.( Not your
    connection to your ISP )
    Highlight the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
    Click on the properties button
Put a dot in the radio button for "Use the following IP address"
    Insert the following
    IP address 192.168.0.1
    Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
    OK your way out.
Note this has worked in most all cases that I have helped except three.
If you can no longer connect, just put the dot in Obtain an IP address
    automatically.
This seems to work if you have DSL or cable with a network card and NO
    network.
If you have a network or router, it will not work."

    Any Help?
