hi guys
after running some spyware programme and not really watching what i was doing it asked me if i wanted to * allow * stop* block* explorer from running.
well i guess i must have hit the block from running option.
now when my computer boots up it appears fine till i enter the admin password.
after that i don't get much else except my xp wallpaper and an empty screen where all my desktop icons used to be.
i've tried some sort of recovery but none offer to reinstate explorer as an option.
guess i've mucked up
Hi and welcome to D-A-L
Can you get into safe mode?
Keep tapping F8
when you get your wallpaper, press Ctrl+Alt+Delete
on the applications tab, press "new task"
Type explorer.exe
im not sure how your spyware program works, but if it just blocks it from the startup list, then that might work.
do you know the name of the spyware program you used?
Hope this helps,
Mike

umm.... this is exactly why i installed the spyware. for some reason Ctrl+Alt+Delete is disabled and says it has been been by the administrator for a week or so now.
logged in using f8 safe mode: last known good configuration option but reboots alittle longer. keyed in password and blank desktop with wallpaper.
logged in using f8 safe mode: logged in as administrator ? (where did this come from) ?and no result. the screen goes black with safe mode in each corner.
logged in using f8 safe mode:using command prompt . same as b4 screen goes black but do get some communication with pc through dos mode. a new screen overlays safe mode one stillin black waiting for c : prompt
all i know of here is c:dir
as for which spyware programme it is i'm afraid to say that i can't remember. will have to think. do know its a trial one for trojan.
one last thing. i booted up the drive as a slave and opened it. says its not formatted. perhaps with the lack of explorer running on this one ?
why would you want to run a spyware programme?Originally Posted by rory382
when you run in safe mode it will say safe mode in each corner and after a while it should have the start menu
if you can get on in safemode, click start (or the windows logo on the keyboard) and type this exactly:
REG add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Pol icies\System /v DisableTaskMgr /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f
then press enter, this should enable the task manager
then, press Ctrl+Alt+Delete, click new task and type explorer.exe and press enter
also, in the processes tab, look for any unusual processes, post back with what you find.
Hope this helps

thanks for reply
been bogged down with work.
safe mode and running explorer.exe i copied all folders to a external drive.
scanned drive using anti-virus.. found one but unable to delete... with a bit of searching i read if you turn off system restore and scan again after a reboot this eliminates and lets you either quarenteen or delete infection.
still not the reason for failure to full start.
have read your advice and sounds good. figured it was in the regedit stuff. will try tomorrow.
other than that it will be a reinstall.
thanks for all your help and replys.
would'nt have made it this far.
cheers.
