    Exclamation Windows won't start

Hi, could somebody please offer me some advice on how I might solve the following problem.

Recently Mcafee security centre detected a .dll file called newdotnet as a PUP and asked if I wanted to remove it. When I clicked yes, the computer froze, none of the windows could be closed and so I had to shut the PC down at the mains, as CTRL ALT DEL didn't work either. That happened a few days ago.

Since then, we have had a few problems with pop up windows. For some reason the pop up blockers had been disabled on the computer. Today my sister was the last to use the PC and she said that it got to a point where many pop ups were appearing and overwhelming the system. Internet explorer was crashing aswell, and about five 'end now' windows appeared.

We tried to turn the computer on later and the start up options menu came up asking if we want to start in safe mode or normally. I tried both options, but with each time, the computer would just reboot, and the same screen appears. So it seems its on a constant loop.

Firstly I would like to know if this has anything to do with the .dll file, and second, I want to know how I would be able to resolve this problem without having to resort to losing all of my saved work on my computer! I'll be devastated if I've lost all of this! Any advice would be dearly appreciated.

    Cheers, **Purplepixie**

have you tried a system restore?

i would sugest first, that you read these instructions: http://www.d-a-l.com/help/showthread.php?t=32403

and post a hijack this log in this section: http://www.d-a-l.com/help/forumdisplay.php?f=8
with your log, please explain your problem

as for the .dll file, i found this:
    DLL File: newdotnet or newdotnet.dll
    DLL Name: Newdotnet.dll

    Description:
newdotnet.dll is a library file used by New.net applications.
most of the problems i found related to that .dll were not being able to access the internet.

    Hope this helps,
    Mike

When i start the computer up at the start it does say press F10 for system restore, however when I did press it, it did not work.

I'll check out the other stuff you have sent. Cheers

Unfortunately, since i can't access the computer, I cannot download and use the anti spyware programmes. I'm a little perplexed as to why Mcaffee has not dealt with it in a normal way. It did detect it, but as I said, it wouldn't and couldn't remove it. Unfortunatley after reading about the .dll file, im a little too late to be removing it thru 'add or remove programmes' since I wasn't aware this might be the culprit. eek.

What is the exact make and model of the computer?

Did you try the option: Last Known Good Configuration?

What exactly happens when you press F10? Have you tried repeatedly?

    Do you have Recovery Disks?

Hi, We have a Compaq computer. Just tried the recovery discs and it's booted up. Everything is working again now!! I've ran a virus scan and nothing has been found. Interestingly when I ran the recovery disc, I could see it was deleting a load of internet files, some of which I recognised as pop ups! When I was pressing F10 before, nothing would happen, and the start up screen would reappear.

The computer is starting up normal now. The recovery disc seems to have done the trick, and I haven't lost any of my files, which is good.

Thanks for the help, and the speedy replies, this is very greatly appreciated!
