    Help please

Hi I wonder if anyone out there can help me, pc started going really slow today and decided to reboot, took ages to start up and when it did my bottom toolbar has disappeared. Also got an error message to say Norton couldn't start up (won't let me update norton either). Thought I may have a virus but did a full scan on one of the online virus scans (housecall) and nothng showed.
My next plan was to do a system restore but I don't have access to the "Start" button to access control panel, the windows button on keyboard is also not showing up the "start" funtion, and nothing happens when I click on the "Help and Support Center Icon" on the desktop
Am pulling my hair out has anyone got any ideas, plain english only please not that technically minded

    Thanks

A getting balder by the minute Mandy

    PS running windows xp

Try this please, restart the computer and when you see the first splash screen start tapping the f8 key and choose command prompt only. Once you get to the command prompt type in the following command exactly as I have it here.

    %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

This will start the system restore wizard and hopefully let you restore to a previous date before the problem started. Good luck and please let us know how it goes.

    (getting balder by the minute)

Just a bit of further info don't know how significant it is, if I click on a url on an email it doesn't open internet explorer and if I click on a link to another site from for instance this site nothing happens although I can navigate around this site no problem

Seems like a complex problem. I have seen most of these issues individualy & there are fixes, but I don't know about the whole package of ills.

    Anyway things you can try:

From Safe Mode can you boot into "Last good configuration"?

As far as the taskbar look here under "T": (Taskbar is Missing)
    http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_abc.htm

    As far as Help and Support look under "H";
there try "Restore after using easy cleaner" or:
Start Menu/Help and Support doesn't work: Go to Start/Run and type in: helpctr -regserver

    As far as URL's:

Go to Start/Run and type in: regsvr32 urlmon.dll. Then go to:
    IE/Tools/Internet Options/Programs/Reset Web Settings.

    Hyperlinks not opening:

Go to Start/Run and type in: regsvr32 actxprxy.dll and then repeat the
    process for regsvr32 shdocvw.dll.

    Check your settings here:

Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/File Types. Scroll down to
    URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol/Advanced/Edit.

Under Application used to perform action it should read:
    "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -nohome

As I say; things to try. Let us know what works and what doesn't.

Am still trying another few things, think I must have virus/trojan or something but not sure what, really want to avoid a system recovery as I don't want to lose all data. Any further suggestions gratefully received
