What are all these startup progs???

OK - no MAJOR problem but my newly installed XP - 1 week - is taking about a minute for it to be loaded enough for apps (firefox, etc) to open after clicking. Admittedly I have cramed a few programs onto it n prob allowed them to load on start up with out realising.

Can anyone tell me what the following ones are please.

I obviously know some, but am not sure what is not necessary for windows to be working. Reluctant to play about too much without 2nd opinion as my bro knackered his windows this way!!!

If the screen shot isn't showing...

    Thanks in anticipation

ccleaner has a startup section which is perhaps faster to use than msconfig

    http://www.ccleaner.com/

Anyway you can check on and off: no need to delete in either app.

Nothing shows up that XP requires to run. All the services and setups are hidden in these apps.

If you want to see everything this will show you:

The only item in your list that I would keep is avast! (your anti-virus).

I only run my AV and Firewall at startup.

And after all that being said it still should not affect your computer as you describe. I would guess that something else is wrong here.

Did it work OK a week ago? When did you notice the change? Anything else that you might have changed?

Thanks for the advice - I'll give it a try when I get a spare minute or two later.

The only other thing I can think of is that I have both Avast and Ewido free trial installed - Would this make a difference???

Ok - just got chance to give it a try, thanks for the programs, very good and easy to use.

Its still taking a while though between showing windows screen and recognising that I'm double clicking something.

What sorts of things can cause this?? i did a fast system scan with ewido yesterday and it found a few things, am gonna leave it on full scan now n see what turns up but my computers certainly not overrun with malware. Although I have downloaded a few torrents but I make sure that the message boards say there clean first. (For those with morals - I only download things that are unavailable in Britain - like lost season 2 - of which I'll buy the box set when available anyway)

Its a long shot but I don't suppose theres any programs that will detect why startup takes so long are there?? - - - Any thoughts??

Also do you think its worth paying for a better antivirus?? (bearing in mind that I'm a student)

What are the best value for money ones??

Sorry for the million questions, don't feel u have to answer them all

First off you should have only one AV running at a time. Otherwise they will be fighting each other.

    I use AVG Free. http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5

I think it is better than anything you can buy (for a personal computer). I've paid for Norton and have tried McAfee and ended up removing both as they took too much control over my computer.

Do you use Disk Clean and the Defragmenter? start > all programs > accessories > system tools

Also you might try to run check disk:

    start > run > cmd
in the new window type chkdsk /f
when prompted to run on boot choose Y & reboot
this will check for & fix any disk errors.
