did you get a disk named "Opperating system"?
if you did, try using the recovery console:
Insert the Setup compact disc (CD) and restart the computer. If prompted, select any options required to boot from the CD.
When the text-based part of Setup begins, follow the prompts; choose the repair or recover option by pressing R. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot system, choose the installation that you need to access from the Recovery Console.
you will need to change your boot setup in the bios so that your cd-rom is at the top.

When you are in the recovery console, type the following commands:
    Fixboot (press enter)
    Fixmbr (press enter)
    Exit (press enter)

your computer should then restart. if it still doesnt work, you could try one of these:
    repair install- http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm
    clean install- http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html

they are 2 very good step-by-step guides. If you chose one of these, you will need to re-install your audio/video drivers either from the "drivers and utilities" disk or by downloading them off the internet.

if you do a clean install, install an antivirus and a firewall (and sp2 if you can) before connecting to the internet.

    Hope this helps,
    Mike
