How old is the printer? Have you unplugged and uninstalled it, then reinstalled it? Some printers require you to install the software before plugging the printer in. Lastly have you tried plugging it into a different usb port?

Is any other usb stuff not working like camera etc? If its not then it's possible there is a problem with the usb.
Right click My Computer, choose proerties and then select hardware/device manager. Are there any yellow exclamation marks showing next to anything there?

    Go to Services: start/run services.msc

Scroll down to Plug and Play

Turn it off. Then turn it back on.

This will repopulate the Device Manager.
