No audio device installed message after Win XP reinstall

    Hello,

After an emergency installation of Win XP Pro (to cope with a nasty virus), I upgraded to SP2 and all the latest XP updates for security etc.

Now, for whatever reason, my system does not play any sounds and in Control Panel --> Sounds & Audio Devices it shows as "No Audio Device". Similarly, for Playback it shows "No Playback Devices" and all menu boxes are greyed out.

I've checked the Services to make sure that Windows Audio is set to start and that all associated services are running too.

The result of an online DAL scan does not detect ANY sound, video or modem installation (see below).

In Control Panel, under Sounds, the Audio Codecs, Legacy Audio Drivers etc are shown as working properly.

Can anyone suggest a possible solution?

    Thanks,
    Jan

    Hi and welcome to D-A-L

Have you the disc that came with the PC other than the XP disc, that'll maybe have the drivers for the soundcard

    Hello there!

    Thanks!

Unfortunately, the PC was one of those "preloaded" ones, purchased from a major retail store over a year ago.

There's scant information in the PC handbook relating to the soundcard. And I have no disc with drivers from that time. All very unsatisfactory I must admit.

    >1. From Device Manager (be sure to select View/Show hidden devices), find the 'ISAPNP
    >Read Data Port' device from the System Devices list. (Of note: once I successfully
    >repaired this problem, this device no longer appears.)
    >2. Right click the ISAPNP device, and select "Update Driver"
    >3. Select "Install from a list or specific location"
    >4. Select "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install."
    >5. The step I left out on prior trials: UNSELECT "Show Compatible Hardware"
    >6. Be sure that "(Standard System Devices)" is selected under Manufacturer.
    >7. Under Model, scroll down until you see "Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator".
    >Select this item, and select "Next>".
    >8. You will receive some frightening error message that you should probably disregard.
    >9. Complete the installation of the driver. You will see your device list magically
    >change before your eyes. The other PNP devices will mysteriously become enabled and
    >active. If not, restart.

This should work and restore your audio

I tried this. The 'ISAPNP Read Data Port' device has disappeared from the System Devices list like you said, but still no sound!!
