What is the indication that it is lost?

    Does the BIOS detect it?

    Does Disk Management detect it?

    Start/Run/ diskmgmt.msc

Re boot the computer and enter the BIOS setup. This is usually done by pressing the Delete key right after the computer starts. Sometimes you will see the key on the screen: Press Del to enter Setup. Some models use F2 as well. If this doesn't work what is the make and model of the computer?

In the BIOS Setup use your arrow keys to navigate to either General > Hard Drives or perhaps Boot Menu > Hard Drives. This will show if the motherboard sees this drive. If not then you have a bad connection and or drive.

    So this is the drive:

    Disk Drives:
    PropertyValue
    Description Disk drive
    Manufacturer (Standard disk drives)
    Model Maxtor 31024H1
Media Type Fixed hard disk media
    Size 10240473600 (~10 GB)
    Number of Partitions

Maxtor has a Diagnostic tool PowerMax:

    http://www.maxtor.com/portal/site/Ma...&downloadID=22

You download this and create a bootable floppy. This will then run diagnostics on that Maxtor drive.

    It works on XP.

    File Name: powermax.exe
    File Download Size: 952 KB

    File Version: 4.22
    Revision Date: 12/12/05
Compatible Operating Systems: OS/2 ,Windows 2000 ,Windows 95B ,Windows 98 ,Windows Me ,Windows NT ,Windows XP Home Edition ,Windows XP Professional
Are you sure you created the floppy properly? You cannot just download to a floppy. You need to create the boot disk:

    Step-by-Step Instructions - Downloading PowerMax

NOTE: The PowerMax download is a self-extracting file.

After downloading to your Windows desktop, insert a clean formatted floppy diskette into your A:\ drive.
Double-click on the PowerMax diskette creator icon.
When the Maxtor pop-up screen displays, click on the "Create Floppy" option.

The files will extract on to the floppy diskette, creating a bootable version of the PowerMax utility. Do not download PowerMax directly to a floppy. PowerMax extracts from a Win32 environment only and will not extract from 16-bit DOS mode.
