What is the model # e.g. Dimension 4200? We can look it up and try to help clarify.

If your base OS was/is XP SP2 then no you cannot uninstall but would have to run some version of the Recovery Options.

Inspiron 6000......Dell is useless ever sionce I got it. They kept referring me to one of their paid cust. svc. contacts. The edits I'm getting for this error is that it must be a damaged disk. Yeah, sure...

I will see what I can find thru the Dell web site.

Is this computer still under warranty?

    Also regarding the Microsoft link:

Did you look in the Event Viewer?

I am assuming that this report was in connection with:

trying to Insert/Picture & the Explorer opens to select file the whole program freezes

First off I would not do anything untill Neal gives you a clear slate. Then if it is only an OE problem:

How do I manually uninstall and reinstall Outlook® Express in the Microsoft® Windows® XP operating system?

Or if you need to reinstall XP itself:

No, no, no, I have no wsay of knowing if the e-mail freeze was connected in any way with the explorer in OE. Maybe OE freezes as a ersult of some other problem. Yes, I reviewed the Event Viewer & found the ID 1005 error, double-clicked and tried chkdsk /f, but was told "chkdsk cannot run because volume is in use by another process...."

Check Disk will only run outside of Windows. On reboot. You can schedule it:

    start > run > cmd
in the new window type chkdsk /f
when prompted to run on boot choose Y & reboot
this will check for & fix any disk errors.

Your image issues also point to OE problems.

This collection of issues is what at some point suggests a reinstall of XP but we can troubleshoot as much as you want.

Is this a new problem with OE? Was it ever working OK? Are you sure your ISP is configured and functioning OK?

    550 - Relaying not allowed

This error message is coming from the mail server, not from OE itself. It means that the SMTP (outgoing) mail server did not recognize you as an authorized user and so rejected your message. Most ISPs configure their SMTP servers to recognize only those whose IP address is on the accepted list, meaning that you are connected directly to that ISP. If you use multiple ISPs, you are likely to encounter this problem. The solution is to change the SMTP server for that mail account under Tools| Accounts| <account name> Properties| Servers.

Another possible reason for this error is anti-virus software that configures OE to use a local proxy for the SMTP server. Since scanning e-mail is not necessary to protect your computer, you should disable the e-mail scan in your anti-virus product, and then re-enter the correct name for your SMTP server.

    It might mean that your
message exceeds the message size limit for the recipient's ISP. Or it might be an issue
of your using Tools, Accounts, Mail, Properties, Advanced, Break Apart messages over xx
KB and having a message over that size.
