Windows XP PRO SP2, PENT4, 512MB RAM, 80GB

I am quite new to this side of computing!! So please give detailed instructions!!!
OK my problems..
A few weeks ago the audio on my computer stopped. I have tried everything I can think of...Yes even checking to see that the volume is on...LOL
I had discovered that the speakers had been set to my modem for some reason.. However, despite changing this back (I don't know how I did) they still don't work. I have even tried headphones but nothing!!!

However, the newest event is that every now and again my computer will just crash!!!
While I am trying to get it started it just keeps beeping.
When I finally get it up and running again.. and error report is sent to Microsoft. A window opens up and says it is my Graphics card and I need to update it (if there is an updated one). Ah yes ( I haven't seen it but it has been reported to me) that a few times there were like strips and squares on the monitor!!!
How can I resolve these problems? How can I find out what my Graphics card is, if I have the new version or not and how to update it?

1. What is the exact make and model of the computer?

2. See if you can run this scan using Internet Explorer: http://www.d-a-l.com/hardware-scan.php
(If you can please post back the results).

3. Also view your Error Log via:

[5] Advanced System Information
[6] View the Error Log

Look for any synchronous entries re: a crash.

4. Also: look in your Event viewer: rt. click My Computer then click Manage then Event Viewer.
Or: Administrative Tools/Event Viewer or Start/Run/ eventvwr
Open the system as well as the application tabs & look for X errors. Click error line for details.
Post back the source & event id & Description especially of errors that seem to coincide with this issue.
Also check the Information lines that might coincide with this issue.

5. Change this setting in order to freeze the screen on an error message. Please write out the details especially the likes of this (for example): Stop: 0x0000000A (parameter1, parameter2, parameter3, parameter4) IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL*** Address x has base at x - filename

rt. click My Computer then click Properties then Advanced then Startup and Recovery Settings then unclick Automatically restart

After gathering your data you will then need to power off the machine manually.

Your errors appear to be driver errors. Is this a new problem? Were things working OK previously? Any new hardware and or software?

Just to verify: this is a custom built computer? Not a Dell or HP or IBM etc. ?

I would first off try to reload the audio driver:

If this in itself doesn't solve the audio problem try disabling the audio half duplex Unimodem in the Device Manager: Start/Run/ devmgmt.msc

Hi, sorry I haven't replied before but have been busy with work!!
Yes the computer is a custom built one.
OK I have updated the graphics card driver which is now Radeon 9250. The strange thing is that when I updated the graphics driver, the audio came back!!!
Is there a link between them?
Since the update there hasn't been any crashes until now.
The comp didn't restart as I disabled the restart as you said!! The following error message was received.

The reply from the MS crash website was UNKNOWN DRIVER caused this crash!!

vsdatant.sys is a driver used by Zone Alarm.

What product of their's are you using?

If Firewall try turning it off and use the XP wall temporarily.

Were your using both at the same time?

Hello, I am using ZoneAlarm Pro and no the Windows Firewall is not activated. In fact it is turned off by ZoneAlarm when you install their Firewall.

I have now followed all your advice and waited for other crashes but apart from the one above nothing has happened!!!

As stated in my last post, after updating the Graphics Drivers, the audio came back!!
But a few days ago it went again , so I updated the Audio Drivers but still nothing!!

I see you have a voice modem. Do you use this? If not you can disable: Periferica audio half duplex Unimodem as it might be conflicting.

I have done that and rebooted but nothing!!

Also you might try to remove the existing driver first.

You could also try the chipset driver (on the above site): VIA 4 in 1 driver ver: 4.49
