I am not familiar with iPod but perhaps you could describe in detail what happens when you plug this in.

I am assuming it is an USB connection? If so and you are hot-swapping do you hear the audio indication that the device is recognized?

What do you mean by it searches thru the auto play? What exactly is happening here?

Do you have any other problems with USB devices on this computer?

Does this post relate to your situation:

    Hi all -
This is a message to provide helpful information we were unable to
find. When we got our new ipod Nano and plugged it in to our HP laptop
with Windows XP, we got a message saying "usb device not recognized."

After much frustration, we figured out the fix: reset the device. To
do this, toggle the hold switch (set to hold, then flip back), then
press the menu and middle buttons at the same time for 6 seconds until
the apple logo appears. Now plug it in to the computer again. This
    fixed our problem.

Good luck, and enjoy your "easy to use" ipod.

have u installed the itunes software properly? and if it worked previously do you know if it was on automatis update or manual? if it was manual i would advise you to go to copypod.com to rescue all your songs then reset your ipod and reinstal all the software.

Sorry guys... i was jus throwing this topic out there... but now i will explain in detail what exactly happens....

    1. I plug my ipod into my usb in the front of the tower(and have tryed the back) same problem

    2. When i plug it in... it makes the little sound i think ur talking about... that indicates.... soo i hear the sound to answer ur question

    3. My ipod says do not disconnect

    4. Sometimes a little thing called autoplay will come and has a flash light going back and forth and im guessing this means its searching for my ipod....

    5. Quicklly after it goes away... but the ipod still says do not disconnect

    6. i go in Itunes and go to the ipod tab... and it says "no ipod connected"

    7. I have totally uninstalled everything including my songs.... and reinstalled with the orginal cd... but no luck....

    8. i am sure its my computer because i pluged my ipod into my friends mac it and it works fine....

To answer ur questions directly jephree...

yes i hear the sound that says device is recgonized

auto play comes up... lil pop up that shows a flashlight searching and it says auto play

i have my scanner plugged into the back of the towers 2 usb devices and it works fine...

and unfortunatley the lil reset fix did not work for me....?

welll thanks for reading and hopefully someone can help me b4 i have to lose alot of money on these pricey ipods...
