    Help with Windows Media Player

    For the last week or so, WMP has not worked for things that i open directly from internet. I can open music or audio files/videos from my computer, but when i try to open a stream i get an error message. I have installed version 11, gone back to 9, etc.... Can someone pleasse help?

    When i click on a stream for media player, my browser shuts down.

    Here is the error message I get:

    "Windows Media Player has Encountered a Problem and Needs to Close"

    AppName: wmplayer.exe AppVer: 11.0.5358.4827 ModName: wininet.dll
    ModVer: 6.0.2900.2861 Offset: 00079383

    Thanks,
    Brandon

    Your error is still reporting WMP 11.

    WMP 11 is Beta software. Problems can be expected.

    That being said I would manually remove all WMP's and the reinstall WMP 10.

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...0/default.aspx

    Uninstall Programs Manually

    Just because Windows XP has the Add/Remove Programs feature it doesn't mean your application will appear in the list. Furthermore, even if it does appear, it's no guarantee that the uninstall feature will work. When you run across one of these situations the items listed below will help in getting rid of the application. Be aware that these steps may not remove everything associated with the application and can impact other applications on the computer. Have a backup or restore point and use caution.

    *

    Find the directory for the application and delete all the files in the directory. Delete the directory. e.g. click C: under My Computer then Program Files etc.
    *

    Open regedit (start/run regedit) and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE and find the folder for the application. Delete the folder.
    *

    Open regedit and navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE and find the folder for the application. Delete the folder.
    *

    To remove the application entry from Add/Remove Programs (if present) open regedit and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Uninstall and find the folder for the application. Delete the folder.
    *

    Some applications have Services attached to them. If this is the case, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es, locate and delete the service.
    *

    In Windows Explorer, navigate to the individual user settings and delete program references. Common places to check would be:

    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs and delete relevant entries.
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup and delete relevant entries.
    C:\Documents and Settings\%YourUserID%\Start Menu\Programs and delete relevant entries.
    [Do this for each User ID listed]
    C:\Documents and Settings\%YourUserID%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup and delete relevant entries.
    [Do this for each User ID listed]

    If no entries were found in the previous step and the application launches automatically, navigate to
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows
    and delete the entry.

    Thanks for your help. I tried uniinstalling Media player though and it said that it is part of the operating system and therefore cannot be removed??

    In addition, is there something i should do with the wininet.dll file? I downloaded the new wininet.dll file onto my desktop. I try to extract it to the C:\Windows\System32 folder to replace and it does see the old .dll file but this is what it keeps tellingme........

    "the process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process"

    I closed all programs and tried it and even re-booted and tried. I also tried going into the system32 folder and deleting the first file but it won't let me.

    Thanks in advance.

    The base version of WMP cannot be uninstalled as it is part of the Operating System.

    However any upgraded versions can be uninstalled. I was thinking that you still have residual WMP11 files as your original error: AppName: wmplayer.exe AppVer: 11

    See if this helps:

    * Do a search for file 'spuninst.exe' (select 'Advanced Options' and check
    the first 3 boxes in the search utility)

    Note:

    There are several 'spuninst.exe' files, find the 'spuninst.exe' file
    associated with 'Windows Media Player 11'

    (I believe it's located at C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallWMFDist11$\spuninst)

    * click the spuninst.exe' to begin the uninstall process, you will return to
    the last version before the installation of WMP 11

    * Restart the computer

    Note:

    Can't find Windows Media Player 11's 'spuninst.exe' file

    * Locate & right-click 'wmp11-windowsxp-x86-enu', select 'extract to
    wmp11-windowsxp-x86-enu'

    * click into folder 'wmp11-windowsxp-x86-enu'

    * right-click 'wmp11.exe', select 'extract to wmp11'

    * click into folder 'wmp11.exe'

    * click 'spuninst.exe' to uninstall 'Windows Media Player 11'

    Your error message is faulting WMP 11.

    Did you try the uninstalling tips posted above?

    Yes, and now here is the error code.

    AppName: wmplayer.exe AppVer: 9.0.0.3250 ModName: wininet.dll

    I would try installing WMP 10 and if the error continues run a HijackThis log by our Pros over in that section.

    Please follow the instructions HERE & then post your log in a new thread in the Spyware, Adware, Viruses and HijackThis Logs section.
    (Not in this section please).

    Please specify what issues you appear to be experiencing along with your log.

    Description:
    wininet.dll is a module that contains Internet-related functions used by Windows applications.

    Note: wininet.dll is a process which the Troj/Zlob-AO trojan tries to disguise itself as under the true process name of %systemroot%\mscornet.exe. This program is a registered security risk and should be removed immediately.
    If they give you an all clear then come back to this thread and we can try further ideas.
