XP logs user off as soon as logs on error

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Hi,

I have been trying to clear Xlob virus from a friends pc. I disabled system restore and removed some registry keys as advised. (Not sure which keys I removed)
Unfortunately I may have removed the wrong key as when the pc restarts it is not possible to log in.
XP gets to the log on screen, allows you to select a user but then immediately logs you off.

I know this is an issue that has been raised before but I would appreciate step by step guidance for how to overcome it.

The pc has recovery console installed and I do have my pc if any files need copying.

Advice would me most gratefully recieved.

Have you tried the built in Administrator account?

Many possibilities here. First off look at these links:

    http://groups.google.com/group/micro...=cannot+login&

After that you can try start/run sfc /scannow (note the space between sfc & /scannow).

You will be asked to insert your disk.

If nothing else a Repair Install should work:

Any Pro CD will work on a Pro installation. As long as the service packs match as well.

Home will work on Home. A Pro XP SP2 for example will work on a Pro XP SP2 install.

    SP1 to SP1 etc.

If it comes to a repair install you just use the Product Key relevant to the computer.

The key is on the computer not on the CD.

Running sfc /scannow will replace any missing system files so should save you from having to manually copy files from the CD.

Does the cd have to be in for sfc /scannow to work?

Yes. After starting sfc /scannow it will ask you to insert your disk.

I have connected the failing hard drive to my pc's hard drive to access the files.

I have checked the windows repair file and it only has the system file in there, not default, securuity, sam or software. Is this normal?

I replaced the system file in config with the repair file after backing it up but now on restarting I get a "Isasse.exe" error.

Am I on the road to recovery or just unearthing more problems?

I would suggest doing a Repair Installation of XP.

Boot your CD and follow the prompts.

    Here is a good guide:

As I ahve removed the hard drive and connected it to my pc, is it possible to restore the system restore files back to their current location?

As I have previously said, I can't do a repair install as I dont have the cd. I am looking at all possibilities to get back into the system.

Is there any files frommy XP installation I can copy to the troubled pc's hard drive that may recover it?

    Thanks again for your advice

The only way of copying files to restore that I know of is outlined here:

How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from starting

Beyond this you will need a CD. If you know the proper Product Key you can use any CD as long as Pro=Pro | Home=Home | SP2=SP2 etc.

If you do not know the proper Product Key then there is nothing that we can help you with
