security downloads shutting down computer
just reinstalled winxp and I glad i didnt do the slipstreaming thing were you burn sp2 updates to cd or i would have never figured this out. but whats happening is that one of the sucurity updates is causing my computer to shut down WHEN I'am online. I'am assuming that its one of the newer ones as it just started happening before reinstall(was reason for reinstall) because i thought it was a virus but now was redownloading them and after downloading a certain one it started to happen again fortianatly did not download sp2 all at once or would not have known about what was causing the problem still. but I've did a systemrestore back to the point of reinstallation and its working.but have no updates
Does anyone know which update might cause this as I was downloading them 10 to 14 at a time and hoping not to have to do trial and error to figure it out.
Also want you to know that Iam still using dial up so to dowmload them all at once would take over 7 Hrs.

What are you downloading?
SP2 should be the first thing to download?
Any other relevant updates just update SP2.

Iam at a total loss on why this is happening or what would cause this to happen if I take it back to reinstall I can stay online but when start to download sp2 it starts shutting when iam online i really dont want to have to have a computer repair company look at it as the cost is prohibitive(75 to 120 just to look at it) Ive replaced everything except the power supply but i figure if it was the power supply why would it shut down when i play games or anything that would tax it more than just going online. any ideas would be great

Just to clarify:
When you try to Download SP2 your computer crashes? Or you just lose the internet connection?
If so: it just shuts off your computer? Any errors?
Are you downloading SP2 from Windows Update?
If you could step by step say what you are doing and what exactly happens it may point to something.

It was doing this before I did the reinstall and i had full updates and full virus scanner
I get online and in no time frame but sometime in the first 2-3 min or shorter it shuts downs (not a power down) and i have to hit the restart button. I get no error messages It just shuts down.
After reinstall if I start from the clean install the first thing i do is down load Nortons Updates and have no problems after that Its when I start to download the sp2 updates that s when it starts.
It also seems that before reinstall that it started after last security update came out but not for sure for as you know I thought I had a virus that fried my mother board so replaced that, proccesor and modem. Also after reinstall if I dont try to download sp2 it lets me stay on for as long as i want.I hope this makes sense. But to answer your questions
1.No like i said sp2 is to big for me to download all at once (dialup) would take up to 7 hrs to down load,so I've downloading it in chunks, so no not during download
2. yes just shuts off no errors
3. yes from win update
4.I go online and if I just let it sit there or try to do somthing after a short period it just shuts down??
ive tried to watch task manager but see nothing going on that should not be going on but things are coming on and off that its hard to tell
sorry so long just rying to give as much info as possible

Write as much as you like. We need the details. I am still not sure if I follow but will keep bouncing back and forth to try and help.
First off I have never seen SP2 broken up so I am still unsure what you are downloading.
Since SP2 was released almost 2 years ago there have been many updates (@ 20 or so). But these updates would require SP2 to be installed first.
Also is it shutting down during a download or during an installation of the download?
You can get an SP2 CD from Microsoft for the shipping charges:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/default.mspx
Another possibility in the interim is to install SP1:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...1/default.mspx
It is important to distinguish between downloading and installing. Is the computer stopping during downloading or installing?
During installation you should not be online and you should turn off Norton and everything else for that matter.

Ok if you go to Win update it will ask if you want to download sp2 Which you hit the download sp2 button or there is a custom button which lets you see sp2 as its individual security componets of which there is 47 individual security updates that makes up sp2. Ok. I hope you understand that part. So because sp2 is so large (its over 110mgs to download) it would take over 7 hrs for me to download.Which with is with dial up. So what I do is find which ones are the smallist and start downloading smallist to largest.Of which I download 1mg to 5mg at a time. but like i said it would start shutting down so I did a system restore to when I first did the reinstall and tried to install one at a time. I downloaded the first 3 (which are in red) critical updates and it started again. I understand the difference between downloading and installing but if you download 5mg or each update individually it installs them at that time and you have to restart after it downloads and installs.IT DOES NOT SHUT DOWN DURING DOWNLOAD.
Ok so it goes like this
1. download updates for Nortons Security (everything works fine)(typed first part of this after this,no shutdowns)
2.start to download updates and like I said you have to restart after every download-install.
3.go back online it starts to shutdown
4. run Nortons virus scanner nothing found ???????????
AND also remember that when I installed new mobo everything was still on my harddrive and all i had to do was reregister windows. I had all updates and totally updated virus scanner(nortons) and it seemed that after the last security update it started shutting down then. I thought it was a virus but Nortons didn't find anything then even though i thought thats what killed first mobo (now i think it was just a coinsadince)So that was why I started with a fresh install of windows but now realize that was a BIG mastake as I lost alot and still end up with same problem.
ALSO with fresh install there is nothing else on here except ISP(which I've never had a problem with) and Nortons. So even though I don't know what everything means I've looked in program files and windows folders and it does look like theres nothing there that shouldn't be there.
Right now I understand this is beyond my ability to understand but really really want to fix it myself as I pride myself on being able to fix whatever is wrong with which is the third computer that I've built and I know this is going to be something stupid that i just didn't think of. But at this moment i tried everything I know to do and hoping the help i get from you will help me.
By the way ISP is earthlink

Thanks again for the detail. As I am just going off line for the evening I will leave just brief comments that I hope will help some
First off I would get the SP2 CD from Microsoft (or a friend) and install as a complete unit.

Until this I would download and install SP1:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...1/default.mspx
Again during the install turn off Norton. I will not advise you against using Norton/Symantec but their products are very intrusive and conflict in many ways with Microsoft.

my XP comes with sp1
and is there any way to burn sp2 from my laptop
-
You can download SP2 here on any computer and burn to disk:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
This was the IT manager release but it is no different from the final end user release.
If you SAVED SP2 to your laptop then it would be there to burn. If you RAN SP2 then it would not have been saved.
If it was saved it would be: WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe
You can search for this under start search: advanced > show hidden & system files.
