A good firewall that is freeware

    I have XP professional.

I saw a previous post by one of the administrators of the site saying that there was freeware firewall at http://soho.sygate.com...etc. However, looks like they stopped the freeware Nov. 05

Does anybody know of a very good firewall that is freeware (if possible).

    Thanks,
    Ray

Thanks for the info. During the download the program stated that the firewall could not be installed completely -- 2 files were having problems being installed. Anyhow, after install my computer was so slow and certain programs would not respond so I uninstalled the firewall.

I found out a few days ago that I have illegal XP professional software. I found out when I attempted to upgrade the Windows Media player and then went into Microsoft for a validation check on the XP on my computer and it stated "Victim of software counterfeiting. Windows product key installed on this computer is not genuine". Anyhow, reason I'm telling you all this is that this might be the reason for the problem with the Firewall download also I've only got 40 GB hard drive. By the way I purchased my computer from a private seller and I did not know the XP was pirated. I will be getting a legal set up from M.S. in a few days when I have the 92 pounds to pay.

By the way since I found out that my XP program was illegal I've had a pop-up window come up every few minutes with a variety of names asking to scan to fix the registry. From what I saw these were different companies trying to sell their wares and not associated with Microsoft. This went on for several days and then suddenly stopped. Here are a few of the names that appeared in the pop-up windows...

    Best,

You most likely have a bug or Malware on your machine throwing up those links.

There are very few free firewalls around anymore. Zone Alarm still has a Free version I believe although I also know that it can be problematic for some users.

There have been a few threads here at DAL re: Free firewalls: here is one:

    http://www.d-a-l.com/help/showthread...free+firewalls

Let us know how the new install goes.

Thanks for your thanks! What do I get from being here? Good question.

I came here almost 2 years ago to ask a question and just started answering others.

I guess I get something to pass my evenings plus the satisfaction of occasionally helping someone.

    Thanks Jephree,

I'll do an install when I've got a legal XP professional running. I'll let you know the result. I'll check out alternatives of the firewalls and if needed will just pay for one.

Keep up the good work :-)
