    Was it ever working?

Do you have an internet connection?

What are the verbatim error messages?

Is this SP2? Firewalled? Anti Virus?

Let me answer you as well as possible LOL

Im not really sure if it was ever working. My mother mightve used a messenger but I wouldnt know. I'm connected through DSL or cable or something along those lines.

The Message that I get with one messenger is simply "Could not connect, please check your internet connection" and with MSN it says "We were unable to sign you in to .NET Messenger service, possibly because of a problem with the service or with your internet connection. Please make sure you are connected to the internet."

When I check the server status of MSN, it says "All systems are stable and running."

So, it must be on my end. Not one messenger will connect.

    Im not behind a firewall.

Are you running XP SP2? How new is the PC?

Check that your IE settings are at Medium under both these tabs:

Tools : Internet Options: Security as well as Privacy

Also: look in your Event viewer: rt. click My Computer then click Manage then Event Viewer.
Or: Administrative Tools/Event Viewer or Start/Run/ eventvwr
Open the system as well as the application tabs & look for X errors. Click error line for details.
Post back the source & event id & Description especially of errors that seem to coincide with this issue.
Also check the Information lines that might coincide with this issue.

You will see that the errors are time marked.

Try to connect to a messenger and note the time.

Then look back in the Event Viewer for errors at that time.

    Also what is listed here:

start/Run winver? Does it say SP2?

And again how new is this PC? Did you just get it today?

It should have Restore Points. Have you checked?

start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore

As a first try I would go back to your earliest Restore Point.

You are using the built in Windows Messenger (version 4.7.0.3001)

Have you tried to install the latest version? 7.5

What other messengers have you tried?

I will try to restore. I figured it wouldnt work since I've been having this problem since atleast 2 days after I got the pc.

Everytime I try to install the newest version of messenger, it gives me Triton or something and it doesnt work properly. =(
