    XP defragmenter problem

Have tried to defragment but clicking on the analyze or defragment button does nothing. It does not seem to be grayed out. I went to cmd and tried to defrag/v but got told "another command line or gui defragmenter is already running". I have tried to find out what other app is running but no luck. Anyone have an idea??
    Thanks in advance.

Have you run defrag on this OS before? Defrag on XP doesnt often look like its doing anything, not like the old 98 machines. The only indications you will get is the little colored lines may change slightly and there should be a percentage showing in the bottom left corner.

No, nothing happens. I have run defragmenter before. No analyzation takes places, nothing. Nothing shows no matter how long I wait. Even though I click on defragement, running light does not come on either. But thanks.

See if mmc.exe is running in the Task Manager

If yes stop it and then try defrag again.

    Other tips:

Defrag with XP SP2 needs the DCOM Server Process Launcher service running.

Click Start, Run and type SERVICES.MSC
Double-click the DCOM Server Process Launcher service
Set it's startup type to "Automatic"
    Restart Windows.

    ---------------------------------------------------

    Start | Run | Type: regsvr32 dfrgui.dll | Click OK

    Start | Run | Type: regsvr32 dfrgsnap.dll | Click OK

    jephree,

1.) closed mmc.exe but defrag still did not respond.
2.) DCOM was set to manual. re-set to auto and re-started win.
    3.) put in regsvr32 dfrgui.dll & regsvr32 dfrgsnap.dll.

SUCCESS!!! was able to run defrag normally.
Many thanks and hats off to you dude.
