Everytime I attempt to play a video clip no matter the format or program used my system crashes as soon as the clip starts playing. I have tried using media player, quicktime, real player, and even Power DVD. Any help would be appreciated.

Is this a new problem? Were things working OK previously? Any new hardware and or software?

If this is a new problem try a System Restore to a point prior to the problem:

start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore

No it's been happening for some time and I just dealt with it.

what video card do you have?
you could re-install the drivers or update direct x

just 2 sugestions..

click start>run and type 'dxdiag' (without the quotes)
go to the display tab
what does it say in the 'notes' section at the bottom?

click the appropriate buttons to test direct draw and direct 3d

I have a similar problem. When using Win98se I had no problems running video, playing GTA3 or NFS5. Since installing WinXP home, I've encountered problems. It seems that only Quicktime and Google Video Player will play video files. Real Player, WMP, DiVX, ATi Multimedia, DVD players, nothing they all jam up my PC, resulting ina frozen screen, no mouse cursor control and the looping of say half a second of audio.

I have also experienced the probelm, where under 98se I could watch composite video input on my screen, not now. Same problem, a big jam up.

I did contact ATi Customer Support, they were helpful in that they spent a lot of time suggesting what drivers to install etc, but it hadnt fixed anything, I have tried around 4 sets of drivers from their site, and the ones on the original CD.

I've got no errors in the System properties/Devices list.
And DXDiag says:
"No problems found.
To test DirectDraw functionality, click the "Test DirectDraw" button above.
To test Direct3D functionality, click the "Test Direct3D" button above."
All diagnostic test successful, as under 98se.

PC spec:
WinXp Home w.SP2
ATi Radeon ViVo 64DDR
ECS K7AMA
1.2GHz Athlon TBird
768 PC2700 DDR RAM (512/256)

Any help would be appreciated, as I have to burn my video's to CD, if quick time wont play them for an error like "unknown File type", and then bung them in my DiVX compatible DVD player.

just a thaught, but you could try re-installing your graphics card drivers.

Yeah, I had tried that liek 4 times with different sets of drivers. ATi have a strange way of doing things, where they have a set of say 6 parts to one driver release. I followed their instructions. The only thing I can attempt, I guess, is a complete format of windows drive and reinstallation of XP home. I did install XP from a formated drive anyway, I'm not a fan of upgrade installs, they seem to cause more trouble than they are worth most of the time.

Well I got a second HDD, so all the important stuff can be dumped onto that, and a clean fresh install may be in order. Then we'll see if a 5 yr old graphics card still functions.

DX9 may be a slight issue with that card, they are old and may not be 100% compatible with new software.
