problem with firewall, i tried system restore but it didn't work, can u help?

    Hi there,
I really hope you can help me with this. The problem is I can not log in to any emails such as yahoo, hotmail, gmail etc. I tried system restore but it still doesn’t work. I wondered if it’s because I have this problem for quite a long time now (probably from about last year) and may be the system can not be restore further than January this year? Is there any other ways that I can do to solve this?
    Thank you,
    amp

Delete all your temporary files: Tools > Internet Options > General > Temp Internet Files

Also flush your DNS cache: start/run cmd then type: ipconfig /flushdns

    See if that helps.

    Just to clarify:

You have had this problem for over a year?

What exactly happens when you try to login to these sites?

    Do you have SP2?

    Any other firewall?

    Any other problems?

Have you tried a browser other than IE?

Do you have a Microsoft XP CD? or was XP pre-installed (OEM) on the computer?

If the latter what is the make and model of the computer?

This problem started about nearly a year i guess but before that it worked very well, i mean there wasn't any problem downloading pages included loging into emails.
    Whenever i try to log in any emails this message comes up;
    The page cannot be displayed
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings.

It's like i can't enter into any security pages but everything else is fine apart from this problem.
Sorry, i don't think i have any microsoft xp cd and i don't really know what make or model of this computer.
do you think you can help?
    thank you,
    amp.

As you mention a firewall: which one is it? Have you tried turning it off?

You could also try > Tools > Internet Options > Security (as well as) > Privacy

Set both to Medium. Also check any listings under Restricted sites.

You can also go to the Advanced tab and set Restore Default.

    Reboot after changes.

The latest version of IE is included in SP2. If you already have SP2 the repair of IE is to reinstall SP2. If you do not have SP2 you should check Windows Update and get it. You can see your current version via winver: start/Run winver

Another possibility would be to have our Security Pros look at a HijackThis log:

Please follow the instructions HERE & then post your log in a new thread in the Spyware, Adware, Viruses and HijackThis Logs section.
    (Not in this section please).

Please specify what issues you appear to be experiencing along with your log.
