Question Only SATA HD is safe to remove!?

I just finished building my new rig, and after completing the install of WINXP, I notice that I was able to "Safely Remove Hardware" my Only hardrive. As if it was a Thumb Drive or IPod. I am running a Maxtor "6H500FO" in single SATA. Can this be right? This is my first time using a SATA drive

Are you being notified of this?

Does the icon show at startup asking if you want to remove?

    What exactly is happening?

The safely remove hardware wizard should apply to any hardware but if you are being prompted by it then there might be another issue.

The icon is promted in my system tray, when I double click it it gives me the option to "Safely Remove/STOP" it. I have never know a system let me stop a boot drive. Its treating as a simple device not like a soundcard or say a graphics card in which I would use the Control Panel options to remove it.

Im using my onboard SATA connection with no other drive on it.

    I see this post:
Does your motherboard have 4 SATA connectors? If so it looks like
motherboard allows hot-swapping of SATA hardrives. I think this is only
permitted for drives connected to SATA connectors 1 & 2 on the motherboard.
It should disappear if you plug the drive into one of the other SATA
connectors (3 or 4). My SATA RAID configuration did this and I too was
surprised by it; I have learnt to live with it though but need to be careful
when stopping any USB devices that might be connected.

Thank You. I double check my MB manual to make sure I did not miss anything on the setting for my SATA. It does say that its Hot Swable but says nothing about which one I should use if im not using that feature. Ill will have to try using number 3 or 4 like you said but if not im just going to have to live with it to TY again
