display resolution problem
I just bought a new computer and within a day I'm already experiencing problems.
the reccomended resolution for my monitor is 1440x900, but when go into display settings and change the resolution it automatically changes it right back to the lowest resolution. Also I have had already a few instances where while I was startingup my computer it would freeze on me before even getting to the loggin screen. I am ready to snap and any help would be very appreciated.
-
Take it back.
If you want to start troubleshooting we can but a new computer should not have problems.
Therefore my first suggestion.
What do you think?
-
Yeah that's pretty much what I was thinking. I mean I spent 3500 bucks so that I'd have a good computer for when I go to school for 3d animation. I'm just so frustrated. I've gone through so much troubleshooting tonight already. The guy at the store that I had build this computer says he thinks it might be a faulty video card.
-
If you have any troubleshooting ideas I would appreciate it though. Gives me something to do tonight anyways..haha
-
I would just take it back to that guy and say Fix it!
For that kind of money you should have a flawless gem running there.
Let us know how it goes.
.....................
As to ideas: did you load the latest graphics drivers?
I am more disturbed by the startup problems unless they also relate to graphics failure.
What exactly happens when it freezes and when exactly does it freeze?
Do you have to power off?
-
it happens as the windows icon withe loading bar is shown and then a few times I had to try to reboot. then I had some kind of old dos looking screen come up saying that there was a failure in loading windows. it also said something about hardware. I'm hopefully gonna get a chance to take it in tomorrow

As this happens outside of XP it probably doesn't log any errors.
You could try looking at the Event viewer: rt. click My Computer then click Manage then Event Viewer.
Or: Administrative Tools/Event Viewer or Start/Run/ eventvwr
Open the system as well as the application tabs & look for X errors. Click error line for details.
Post back the source & event id & Description especially of errors that seem to coincide with this issue.
Also check the Information lines that might coincide with this issue.
How to view and manage event logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
Also view your Error Log via:
[1] Start Menu
[2] Help and Support
[3] Pick a Task
[4] Tools
[5] Advanced System Information
[6] View the Error Log
Look for any synchronous entries.
Also check your Device Manager under Display adapters:
Start/Run/ devmgmt.msc
Also perhaps dxdiag under Display:
start/Run/ dxdiag

I did find one thing that looked like it could have something to do with it in event manager. It said this when I opened this error.........."COM+Event Sytem detected a bad return code during it's internal processing" it also said it's a catagory (50).
So I don't know. That's the extent of searching for an answer that I'm gonna be doing
-
Event category 50 deals with hardware issues.
The Event ID might be more specific.
But again just take it back.
Let us know how it goes.
I would love to see the specs on that machine
Post back this scan if you want to:
