"Not Responding"
Before I get to my question, here is what I have:
Hewlett-Packard
Pavilion
Intel[R] Celeron[TM] CPU
1200MHz
1.20GHz, 128 MB of RAM
Microsoft Windows XP
Home Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 2
Trend-Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 2005 (I keep it updated)
Windows Defender (Beta 2)
Spybot - S&D 1.2
VALORnet dial-up (only thing available where I live)
AAARRRRGGGG!!!!
My problem happened as I was trying to type this question. Had to start all over. My computer keeps freezing up. Whether I am surfing the net, checking e-mail, editing photo's, just whatever. The screen will freeze. In the bar at the top of the screen where it shows the name of what is being displayed, website, or whatever, it say's this "(not responding)". Sometimes if I wait long enough, 10 minutes maybe, it will start responding again. But usually I have to end the program and start over. It seems to be getting progressivly worse. A scan shows no virus's or spyware. Any help would be appreciated.

My first guess is RAM.
XP minimum is 256 MB.
-
Do you mean I don't have enough RAM? I have a lot of photographs in folders. Will removing them help? If I need more RAM, how do I do that?
-
You have 128MB. The general requirement for XP to work well is 256MB.
It is easy to add: just a plug-in slot.
It is best to match the brand and speed of your current RAM if you are adding to it.
It might be best to go all new if you can afford it.
What is the exact Pavilion model # ?
This is a good RAM scan: http://www.crucial.com/systemscanner/index.asp

Model #? On the front of the tower it has "hp pavilion 511w", is this what you are asking?
As for extra RAM being - "easy: just a plug in", is this something I could do, or will I need to take it to a computer store?

HP and Compaq Desktop PCs - Upgrading Memory (RAM)

RAM (standard) 128 MB
Maximum 512 MB
Speed PC100
Type SDRAM
DIMM Slots Two
You can go easily to 256 by adding another 128 stick.
If you want to go to 512 with two new 256 sticks you will have to be careful as to the density of the RAM. This may need a special order. This is because of the age of your machine.
Let us know if we can help more.

OK, I will try adding the 128 MB stick. One last question. Where do I go to get one?
-
You can go to a lot of sites on-line or to your local computer or office store.

Thanks for the thanks!
Did you ever try this scan:

One thing to keep in mind is:
Speed PC100
Type SDRAM
If you don't Max the board 512 you should be able to use either PC133 or PC100
PC100 is an older speed so just verify that the RAM you get is either PC133 or PC100
If you just add another 128 to go to 256 total either of the above should work.
