No sound WIN XP custom built

Hi: In trying to activate the speech capability in Word, I uninstalled the sound at the recommendation of the help directions. Now, not too surprisingly, I have no sound and not a clue how to restore it. The computer is custom built and I suspect the install disk is in Chicago at my son's house. I'm in Mexico. Shuttle website is not for end users, I could not determine how to download anything helpful from there. Here is the results of the hardware scan. What's shown under Soundcard is what I ran an install on this morning, selecting from the list provided. But it says it cannot open (or run, I can't recall which). HELP!

    Hi, welcome to DAL,
    try this link:
    http://driver2.sis.com/audio/7018/7018_114.zip

download the .zip file and extract it to a different folder, then run the .exe file

Hi, Thanx for the quick reply.

I have downloaded and extracted as you suggest. The WINXP folder does not contain an executable file, except the uninstall. The DOS and WIN95_98 do. There are also folders for NT, WIN2000, WINME, AUDIRACK, and WIN98SE. WINXP contains the security catalog, Setup information, system file and the uninstall app. Suggestions?

Hi Mike: I got that file downloaded, extracted and ran setup ok. Restarted, got message there was new hardware. Had to select hardware from list (I selected SiS 7018 Audio Driver.) Windows warned me not to, I did anyway. Went through that entire install procedure. At the end I got the message "this hardware will not start. Code 10." That's the same message I got when I downloaded the driver from the list this AM. Guess that didn't work. Maybe it isn't the right info since I was just guessing this AM. Do I need to buy something from someone to make this work, or look in the back of my computer to ID the sound card? I think the hardware scan only showed the SIS 7018 because I'd tried to install it this AM. What do you think?

i would have thaught re-installing the driver would have worked.

click start> run and type in 'dxdiag' (without the quotes)

go to sound 1 and click test direct sound (make sure your speakers are on)

also, go to the music tab and copy what it says next to 'general MIDI DLS Collection'

The sound tab has no info, only the message "no sound card was found. If one was expected, install driver.....etc."

The info on the Music tab is C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\drivers\GM.DLS (Version 1.00.0016.0002)

By the way, both times that I attempted to install the driver, when it failed, Windows suggested I use the troubleshoot button. Both times I tried with zero results - troubleshooter did not open.

Hi Mike: Good news! I finally determined for sure that the needed driver is Realtek. The driver downloaded and installed without any problem, and now I have sound again!!!
I want to thank you so much for your efforts, and I know had the SIS 7018 BEEN the right driver, things would have worked. Thanks for taking your time to try to help me.
