    how to remove unwanted items

Please can someone tell me how to remove unwanted "Play cd or DVD with" options from the automated list that pops up when inserting a disc.
Having tried various "players" and only wanting to keep Windows Media Player i still get all the other options that i removed and deleted from my PC.
    Hope ive made sense here.
    thanks

when you get the "open with" box chose what you want to open the disk with and check the box saying 'always do the selected action' and click ok

if you dont want that box to open at all, click 'take no action' check the box saying 'always do the selected action' and click ok

Hope this is what you wanted.

Here is a registry edit plus other tools that will do the same automatically. If you choose to manually edit the registry back it up first.

How to backup the Windows XP Registry?

Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:

    HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1131426265-79857088-3472284960-1006\Software\Microsoft\
    Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts

    or: HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1801674531-746137067-2147266873-1003\ etc.

Select the extension you want to modify, choose "OpenWithList" and delete
the value you want removed from the list of programs.

    OR:

    Clear Dynamic "Open With" Lists
    http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/OpenWithClear.zip

    OR:

You can also use MRU-Blaster from JavaCool (they also make SpywareBlaster
and SpywareGuard which are handy to disable or prevent spyware infection).
    Go to:

    http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/mrublaster.html

One of its config settings is to clean the OpenWith MRU ("most recently
    used" list).
