i would still post a Hi-jack this log in the 'Spyware, Adware, Viruses and HijackThis Logs' section
have you tried un-installing the software from the disk?
if that doesnt work, try a system restore:
    Through the All Programs menu:

    1.Click Start.

    2.Point to All Programs.

    3.Point to Accessories.

    4.Point to System Tools.

    5.Click System Restore.

6.Follow the instructions on the wizard.

Hi again, i think i may have to un-install xp pro then re-install it but can anyone tell me if i can use my brothers disc or does the person who originally put xp on have to do it? i think that this will be the only way. it might be best to start over again

You can use any OS disk but it will have another key. You should have your own Xp disk. Do you?

no, my brother-in-law loaded xp but he doesn't know much about computers. is there any way of doing it without his help or finding out the key number off of the system? I'm not too good with the technical stuff

I'm sorry for the delay I was looking back at your previous messages. I do not think you should reinstall Windows XP! If you have no other problems than the icon on the lower left of the desktop, DO NOT REINSTALL XP. You can delete the icon. You should take a few steps to determine if it can be deleted quickly by clicking on it an trying to delete it there first.

I've tried that and all that happens is that it takes me to windows to purchase a geuine window product. My bro-inlaw says that its where the pc is set up for automactic updates and told me to turn it off. This isn't a brand new pc, it is rather old but turning the updates off has done nothing except bring up the security sheild. The counterfeit message appears when you start up the pc and the xp page is loading and the bubble appears every so often but i have hidden that on the task bar.

Basically the only problem you have is the message pop up that you may have counterfeit software?
