Help! Windows XP Pro Stuck in 640x480!

Exclamation Help! Windows XP Pro Stuck in 640x480!

I can go to list all modes and change it to 1024x768, but that makes it in 256 color mode! It doesn't recognize my monitor, only saying DEFAULT. Basically this only gives me 2 options: 640x480-16 bit or 1024x768-256 color.....

I can't install ANY video drivers from dell, driver setup crashes each and every time saying "System problem" or something.

    What should I do? It's a dell Inspiron 1150.

    Please! Please!

Is this a new problem? Were things working OK previously? Any new hardware and or software?

    Perhaps try this Application:

    Dell Driver Reset Tool
    Application

Release Title: Application: Dell Driver Reset Tool, Application, Windows XP, English, Multi System, v. 1.02L (DiRT - External Zip) , A01
    Release Date: 2/7/2005
Description: Driver Reset Tool is an application that will scan the system for malfunctioning drivers and reset such drivers to the original drivers available in the system.

    Inspiron 1150

Also the verbatim error message may help.

Brand new problem. Turned off my computer, turned it back on a bit later and BOOM, low resolution.

  5. #5
OK. Trying Driver Reset Tool Now..Will update in a few minutes.

  6. #6
OK, I ran it and it found all my drivers fine,( Graphics controller, modem etc.) but for video, it just said something like "Video Driver (VGA Compatible)"

It still can't recognize my monitor!

I would try a System Restore as this is a new problem.

start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore

    If that doesn't help:

Did you try the Video drivers from this link?

    http://support.dell.com/support/down...&os=WW1&osl=EN

    Intel Extreme Graphics 855 GM
    Driver

Release Title: Video: Intel Extreme Graphics 855 GM, Driver, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Multi Language, Multi System, v.6.14.10.4363, A12
    Release Date: 8/25/2005
Description: Graphics driver for Intel 855GM/GME systems

The DAL scan sees this chip. Try doing all of this in Safe Mode.

It won't let me install the drivers I download. It says error. Then when I went into Control Panel > System > Video Controller > Update Driver, it automatically found the driver, but after installation it said CANNOT FINISH because "access denied."

I wasn't in safe mode, though, so if I get into safe mode, do you think that should help?

  9. #9
OK, I tried everything in safe mode and it STILL didn't work. Not authorized, errors, etc.

Would COMPLETELY re-installing windows work? Like, wiping out my comp? I wouldn't mind since i have an external drive to put my documents on.

Do you have the built in administrator account as well as the one that you are using?

You would see all your accounts here:

    start/run control userpasswords2

If your built in account is other than the one that you are using I would try to boot into that first.

Click Users must enter a User name... etc. then reboot.
