    Microsoft updates and downloads...

I've been having this problem for a long, long time. For whatever reason I cannot view certain microsoft pages. Mostly pages related to downloads, updates, patches, SP2, ect.

I dont know if i have SP2, if i don't I don't think I can download it at this time because of the above mentioned problem. I cannot download game updates for Halo, because like I said before, I cannot load/view the right page. There are other Microsoft related downloads that I cannot access.

When I do go to Microsoft.com and click on links like "game update" or "auto-patcher"... I get "page cannot be displayed"

    Any ideas?

start/Run winver will show what XP SP you have.

Or right click My Computer then click Properties.

What happens when you go to Windows Update? Any error message or just Page not Found?

First the page loaded and I was prompted to download "Windows Update". So I did, I closed the window when finished, and returned to the page in your link.

The page loads, and I see "Welcome to Windows Update".

There is a link "Start Now" next to "New! Get Microsoft Update today!". If I click on the link, the resulting page says "page cannot be displayed".

Otherwise there is a Express scan and Custom scan option.

Did you see if you have SP2?

What happens when you click the Express button?

Clicking express begins scan [moving green bar] but never seems to stop.

Do you have another admin account that you can try? Perhaps the main? Is this Pro or Home?

You will find the Home admin in Safe Mode. And speaking of Safe Mode why not try using Windows Update there as well.

Try booting into Safe Mode by repeatedly tapping the F8 key after your BIOS POST but before Windows starts.

SP2 can also be found here:

Also: do you have Automatic Updates ON? (right click My Computer then click Properties then Automatic Updates.)

    im using home edition

there is an admin, i will go into safe mode and run update and then edit this post.

when i click your link, the page loads fine. I choose to download SP2 by clicking "download" and a small window opens in my screen to the top left but the "page cannot be displayed" and NO download prompt appears.

The option selected under AutoUpdates was "download updates but ask me when to install them" but i just changed it to full auto.

[edit] running WU in safe mode...

As far as I knew you couldnt go online in safemode, but I'm sure you know what your doing. I never got that far anyway.

I couldnt find something to simply click and run WU, so I found the folder under "program files" and this is what it contained:
    -a folder named "V4" which contains "iuhist.xml"
    -a file named "V4Hardware1.xml"
    -a file named "V4Hardware2.xml"
there were no .exe files or anything else in there... i'm not sure what that means but it didnt seem right.

The current version of Windows Updates is V6.

    Anyway some ideas:

This problem can be caused when data has been modified on Windows Update and
old data still resides in cookies. Please try the following steps and let
me know if this resolves the problem.

Clear Cookies, Temporary Internet files, and History:

    1. Open Internet Explorer
    2. Select Tools > Internet Options
    3. Second frame, select "Delete Cookies"
    4. Next, select Delete Files, including all offline content, click OK
    5. Third Frame, select "Clear History". Click Ok
    6. Exit Internet Explorer then try Windows Update again.
Do you get "Page not found" or "Page cannot be displayed"?

    Some suggestions:

Verify the system Date/Time is accurate.

Check the language setting in Internet Explorer:

    1. Click "Tools" and then select "Internet Options".

    2. Click "Languages".

    3. Make sure at least one language is listed in the "Language Options"
    dialog box.

    Clear the browser's cache
    1. Click Tools > Internet Options
    2. In the "Temporary Internet Files" section, click "Delete Cookies"
    3. Click "Delete Files" click "Delete all offline content" click OK
    4. In the "History" section, click "Clear History".
    5. Click "OK".

Check for any errors being reported in the Windows Update.log file.

Copy and paste "%windir%\windows update.log" (w/o the quotes)
into the Internet Explorer address bar and hit Enter.

Scroll down to the current date and look for the error being reported.
Next, Look for the error message in the Windows Update Troubleshooter:
    http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/

Please try the suggestions listed. If error persists please post the error
    message from the log file.

I cleared cookies, deleted files including offline content, and cleared history. When I clicked WU in "Tools" i got the usual "Page cannot be displayed".

i verified aat least one language under "language" in "tools"

when i copied and pasted "%windir%\windows update.log" it said "page cannot be displayed". so i tried again and it told me no such file exists and asked if i wanted to create one now...

[edit] if by "verify system time/date" they meant, check the time/date in the bottom right corner then yes, its accurate.

I would run the System File Checker:

start/run sfc /scannow (note the space between sfc & /scannow).

You will be asked to insert your XP CD. This will check and fix all XP system files.
