Is this a new problem? Were things working OK previously? Any new hardware and or software?

If this is a new problem try a System Restore to a point prior to the problem:

start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore

Do you have a retail XP CD or was XP pre installed (OEM)?

If the former I suggest a Repair Install as seen here:

    http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

If the latter consult your manual for the Non-Destructive Recovery Options which will be their version of a Repair Install.

This will save your programs and settings but reinstall all XP files. You will then need to reload SP2 unless your CD is an SP2 CD.

And in the future it's a good idea to have System Restore on.

A Repair Install will retain your data and programs. Here is a good guide:

    http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

    Or more simply explained here:

How to perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows XP
