    Programs won't work, update

Hi. I have a problem I think is a WinXP problem. It seems that ever since I installed the last updates from Microsoft, I can't get programs to work. They will open to a blank screen. (By that , I mean that a window will usually pop up but it will just be stopped) I tried to do a system restore but got the same thing. I noticed on IE that it keeps saying that scripting needs to be enabled, even though I set the options as instructed. I can't even update from Microsoft updates because it says my scipting needs to be enabled along with Active X controls. Sorry so long and thanks for any help in advance.

What are the verbatim error messages?

Also look in your Event viewer: rt. click My Computer then click Manage then Event Viewer.
Or: Administrative Tools/Event Viewer or Start/Run/ eventvwr
Open the system as well as the application tabs & look for X errors. Click error line for details.
Post back the source & event id & Description especially of errors that seem to coincide with this issue.
Also check the Information lines that might coincide with this issue.

How to view and manage event logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP

Also view your Error Log via:

    [1] Start Menu
    [2] Help and Support
    [3] Pick a Task
    [4] Tools
    [5] Advanced System Information
    [6] View the Error Log

    Look for any synchronous entries.

There aren't ant error messages, it just appears that the program freezes or application i.e. On system restore, I would get a box with system restore , the minimize and close buttons in the bold border, the body is blank and won't do anything but min, max and close. I don't know if this will help but also it takes at least 2 tries before that comes up, everytime. As for the event viewer, I have a couple that seem to repeat- 1) service control manager, event id 7023, the application mgmt sevice terminated with the following error: The specified module could not be found. (found this several times) 2) service control manager, event id 7000, the mrtRate service failed to start due to the following error: The system cannot find the file specified 3)srv, 2000 The server's call to a system service failed unexpectedly. Hope this helps. Also I checked for virus' using AVG free, pests with pestpatrol, and could not get spybot to update but checked ok with the detection rules it had. THX

In order to expedite this as a first response you might want to post a HijackThis log for review by our Pros in that section:

Please follow the instructions HERE & then post your log in a new thread in the Spyware, Adware, Viruses and HijackThis Logs section.
    (Not in this section please).

Please specify what issues you appear to be experiencing along with your log.

After they give you an All Clear please return to this thread and we can pick it up from there.
