DVD R/W problems
I switched out the Dell system loaded Cd and loaded a Sony DVD R/W and now get the "blue screen of death. I had this system error previously and was told to go to run, msconfig, startup and select selective startup. From there I do not remember what I was to unclick under Selective Startup and then which items to leave checked under Start up. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What is the exact Blue Screen error?
Does it run OK if you unplug the DVD?
As to Startup you can try unclicking all at first and then reclicking one by one.
Or visa versa start unclicking one at a time.
There is nothing in that list that is critical to XP starting.

Thanks so much! I went into the Startup under msconfig and unclicked all of the items I was not sure to what they were related. I then was able to successfully play a DVD. Since I now how my computer on a Selective Startup, can I leave it that way without running into other difficulties?

Yes. Just click the annoying box at startup and tell it to not show anymore.
You will probably find your startup much cleaner without all that stuff.
The only important things to have startup are your Anti Virus and Firewall.

uh-oh....Now when I load a page I now get an alert with the following message..."The document contains not data" and button with OK. When I click on the OK button the page is there and the message is gone. Have I unchecked something on the Selective Startup that needs to be rechecked?

Is this IE? Does this happen on every page? Do you have a connection to your modem?
If no connection you might want to look at startup for any modem software.
Also you can try start/run cmd
then type ipconfig
then copy paste the # of the Default Gateway into your Address bar and then Go.
What happens?

jephree,
Boy! Bet you can tell I am definitely a newbie on this stuff! I just switched from dialup to DSL and that might be part of my problem with the message. I have not gone into the computer to delete (mainly because I do not expactly know when to go and what to do) my old dialup connection.

Is it an Ethernet modem or USB?
Did you receive any setup instructions from your ISP?
The basic XP wizard is under Control Panel > Network Connections > Create a new connection.
