XP does not support burning or playing DVDs within itself. You need a third party program such as Nero.
No drivers are necessary.
As to CD's: Are your speakers working OK otherwise? Do you hear System Sounds?
Are you certain that your CD/DVDs are compatible with the drive?

hi there
i have nero installed, but the problem is that when i insert a dvd-r to burn a film. the function note appears. is there a dvd-r speed and make that is the best to use when burning?
i think the problem with no sound does have something to do with my speakers as i do get sound through my wireless speakers which are connected to the pc.
thanks

That drive is detailed here:

Also check this setting:
Right click E under My Computer then Go to Properties; Click on Recording; Check "Enable CD recording on this drive".
Also here is the same drive: http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=150871
