    unmountable boot error

I was using my computer and it froze. I turned it off and when I turned it back on the blue screen of death with unmountable Boot volume was there - Have tried F8 on start up but it wont start it safe mode or last good known settings - just goes back to blue screen of death I have not got the XP cd as it came already installed on my machine and I dont know where the recovery disks are as I have just moved. I did copy the NTLDR AND NTDETECT files from my working laptop onto a floppy and then put it in the problem computer but it just came up with I/O error. I dont know anything about BIOS or how to change it . Please help my daughter desperately needs this computer for her A Level work

    Thanks

try using the 6 floppy boot: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en (the additional information may be usefull at the bottom)

boot up using those disks, inserting each disk when asked.
you can then enter the recovery console.

when you get the black screen, you may need to type the administrator password, then type the following command:

    /fixboot

    then re-start.

    Hope this helps,
    Mike

Thanks for the reply - was able to borrow a xpcd and got into the repair - typed CHKDSK and it got 75% of the way through before the message came up "the volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems"
I then typed Fixboot and it said the target partition is C are you sure you want to wrtie a new bootsector to the partition - help - totally unsure as to what I am doing.

    Thanks

Type y or yes (whichever it tells you to) and hit enter
(sorry, i forgot to mention that...)

i have had this error and i think that fixed it for me.... well it was either that or a repair install

dont know how long, goin back out soon.... dont know when though and im only getting back tomorrow.

    i found this:
You can boot to the XP cd and when you see the Welcome to setup press the letter R
You will get a dos prompt
Then type "chkdsk /p" without the quotes and hit enter
When that is done type "fixboot" and hit enter
"Y" and enter at the prompt
Then type "exit" and hit enter
The system will now reboot into Windows

If for some reason that don't work for you, you can boot to the recovery console like above and...
    Type "chkdsk /r" then enter
When done type "exit" and hit enter.
This will take longer, but the system should boot back into Windows.
    is that what you did?

ok, when you re-boot do you get the same error?
