Windows XP Notepad Not Saving as HTML anymore

I have a Sony Vaio PCG-FR130 Laptop and was able to open Notepad, type html and save the file by selecting "All Files" and the file would be saved as an html file. However, now the laptop saves the html as a txt file. I re-installed the computers software again (and then loaded the anti-virus software), and I have the same problem. The only way around this problem is to type the file name and ".htm" within quotes. It then saves as an html file.

I would like the computer to save the files as html without using this alternative method. The computer was dropped on the floor twice several months ago, and I think that I might have a hardware problem. Is there any way for me to find out how to correct the problem without sending the computer out for repairs?

Sorry for the very delayed response but you might try this:

    Win XP Fixes

    Windows® XP File Association Fixes

HTM/HTML Associations (Restore the default associations for htm/html files)

If this is your only issue I doubt very much that it is a hardware problem.
