Thumbs down Repair install... failed again!!!

hi, i have just attempted a repair install (XP SP1, cannot find the slipdisk i made ) hoping it would sort out a few minor problems, but i ended up with a bigger one.. it was going fine untill it restarted, i got the language configuration and all that and when it said "installing windows" it kept saying it could not find the files, when i clicked browse, the disk was being read and all the files were there, its just that windows isnt reading them kind of (because the files are actualy THERE, ive tried both drives D and E and on both i got the same problem...

i dont think it is a bad disk because i can see that the files are there.
do you think i will have to do a repair install?

Edit: sorted it now, i did a clean install and this time i have partioned my hard drive into 3 parts: local disk (C) (4.8GB)..... Documents (D) (996MB)...... and programs music and downloads (E) (32.4GB)

However, after a clean install of xp sp1, installing sp2, formatiing D and E, re-installing aol and the modem driver, re-installing McAfee personal firewall, avast and windows live messenger (beta)
both windows live messenger and msn messenger 7.5 STILL doesnt work!!!!!!!!

msn 7.5 comes up with: 80048820
msn 8 (live messenger) shows this: [awaiting picture]

any ideas before i throw it out of the window?

    Thanks in advance,
    Mike

Just tried again and it didnt work so i did this which i found in your search (1st search 1st link, i think):

    # Double click on the clock in the taskbar and make sure the system clock is set correctly.
    # Register softpub.dll using the regsvr32.exe tool.

    1. Click Start, and then click Run.
    2. In the Open box, type regsvr32 softpub.dll and then click OK.
    3. Restart MSN Messenger.
    Thanks alot

    it only works when i click start> run> regsvr32 softpub.dll

is there a way of having that load on its own at windows startup?

i tried msconfig.... couldnt see anything there

ive added it to starup (in the start menu) and il let you know if it works
