PC keeps restarting
Hello,
I have looked all over the net to try and fix this problem myself but i'm still havig a problem and this forum seems the most welcoming so I thought i'd finally try here for help.
Between every 3-6 hours my pc restarts and it's getting more frequent. This has been going on for about a week now. Everything was running smoothly until then. The only things I can think of which I done was removed 6/7 "Non plug and play devices" which the games company Starforce had unknowingly to me installed on my pc. I thought this was the cause of my dvd-rw not responding when I put in a dvd disc.
I have not installed any new hardware. As I said my cd/dvd-rw won't respond to dvds but it does respond to cds, that was the only problem I had with my pc and that has not been working for months before any of this occured.
I have run Ad-Aware, Spybot and AVG all in safe mode. I always keep these progs up to date. I also ran Windows update. Under device manager all my devices are in correct working order no exclamation marks (even with my dvd-rw?).
When I disabled "Automatic restart" under Start up and recovery, on my last crash I got the following message.
A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
DRIVER_IRQ4_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
Technical info *** STOP: 0x000000D1 (0xFF98B000, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0xF54B5F2D)

I can post some of the errors i'm getting from the Event Viewer if that will help?
I appreciate any help i'm at my wits end.

Welcome to D-A-L
XP does not have inbuilt support for DVD. You need third party software to play or burn DVD's.
That being said that crash was triggered by an Alcatel driver. Is this error always the same?
I see this in you scan: Alcatel SpeedTouch USB ADSL PPP but I also see a Conexant SoftK56 Modem
What is your connection device? Modem?
You might try a System Restore back to last week when things were OK (besides the DVD).
If it doesn't help you can always undo it.
start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore

Hiya!
Oh my! I'm using the Alcatel SpeedTouch USB ADSL modem and having said that I was just using DriverGuide Toolkit and under the Alcatel modem in big red letters it said the following. "WARNING: Driver cannot be saved. The INF file cannot be located: oem5.inf
I'm not sure if i'm getting different error messages when my pc crashes. I'll do as you suggested and then wait to see if it happens again.
As for the DVD well i'll buy a new one sooner or later as it was only 8x with no dual disc support thingy!
Thanks for the speedy response hopefully all will be resolved.

The DVD just needs software ... it is probably a fine drive.
Are you using more that one modem? Or just the Alcatel?
Let us know if the System Restore works. If not we will take it from there. If it continues to crash please note the details as you did so well originally. That is the info we need.

It's me!
Just like to say my pc has not crashed since I took your advice. I actually had to re-install the modem, but once you let me know why my pc was crashing I knew what to do. I'm thanking the heavens it wasn't a serious problem as I was on the verge of re-installing windows xp.
Thanks for your help jephree and i'm spreading the word about this user friendly site.
