Is this a new problem? Were things working OK previously? Any new hardware and or software?

    See if anything here helps:

When you manually power off with the power button it is normal to have to hold it for several seconds.

Are you sure that your Shut Down option is set to Shut Down and not Restart?

start > Shut Down > there is a drop down menu there

    Shut Down

yes..it only gives those options..if I was blind , I might hit wrong button...but..shut down is shut down...and clicking shutdown momentarly shuts it off....and then it powers back up by itself...I searched microsoft for that patch, and its not there...it was supposed to be part of SP 2..which I cant find a way to see its list to determine if it is in there...any ideas?

Did you change the restart option here:

rt. click My Computer then click Properties then Advanced then Startup and Recovery Settings then unclick Automatically restart

    Do you have SP2?

What is listed when you go to start/Run winver
