In the Device Manager is there a yellow ! next to this device?

Start/Run/ devmgmt.msc

Check in Windows Update for a driver. start > All Programs > Windows Update

Choose Custom install and look for Audio Drivers.

Again the best solution is to find the manufacturer of your motherboard which these scans cannot find. If you want to open the case it is probably labeled.

Another attempt would be to load the VIA chipset drivers. Set a System Restore point before doing so.

Hubby's PC is having the same trouble! I've run the two scans recommended to the previous guy, here are the results: Belarc first and later at bottom DAL scan...
What should I do?? No new software but had gotten it back from shop a month ago when the HDD started racing and just whizzing away and freezing. Tech said it was a virus but I suspected not. Seriously think it was a hardware problem.
