    Promblem Booting

I havent got a clue what has happened, but basically. I shut my computer down last nite holding the reset button because it was frozen. I have had to do this numerous times and except it as an XP fault. However I woke up this morning, turned on my pc, and am unable to start windows. It comes up with the message saying windows was terminated unexpectanly and asks the questions like which mode do i want to boot in. I choose any of them, e.g last know good setup, then it proceeeds to boot, but after a second it just stops booting and restarts back to the same screen as before. Ive booted in Linux for the mean time, but i have many many files on the other system, how do i get them back without reinstalling, or is there anyway to fix this problem of booting??

Have you got the original XP Cd?
Boot from Cd when prompted press [R]
This will launch system recovery.choose Windows Installation [typically] by pressing 1
When prompted for password Press Return.
    Type chkdsk /r [note space]
Press Return.this should fix errors. Then type EXIT and Press Return.

Is your XP CD a Microsoft version or was it pre-installed (OEM)?

If the former you can either try the Recovery Console or a Repair Install as seen here:

If you cannot boot into Windows I would suggest first trying the Recovery Console:

    http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;307654

To try to fix the boot:

Assuming that your XP is on C: then:

    Type:

    FIXMBR C:

then enter. After that completes type:

    FIXBOOT C:

then enter. After that completes type:

    BOOTCFG /rebuild

then enter. After that completes type:

    EXIT

    then reboot.

If in the process you are asked to run chkdsk say YES.

Also after the BOOTCFG /rebuild you will be prompted to:

    C:\Windows
    1. Add installation to boot list? (Yes/No/All):
    2. Enter Load Identifier: (Custom description for an operating system loading from the Boot menu)
    3. Enter Operating System Load Options: (that is: /fastdetect)

    Reply:
    1. Yes
    2. XP
    3. /fastdetect

If this fails you can run a Repair Install that will leave your data intact:

    http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm
Neither of these methods will alter previous programs or settings although backing up important stuff should always be done.

If XP was pre-installed (OEM) consult your manufacturer for Recovery Options. What is the make and model of the computer?
