Not real sure that I am following your problem:
Several Folders with Music Files in # sequence ok.
"suddenly all new folders will not store them" ? Can you clarify?
"when re-opening the folder they are all mixed up" Meaning your # sequence for previous lists is changed?
Have you checked all of your settings in Control Panel > Folder Options?
Did this just start happening? Any changes? New Hardware? Software?
Also: what does this have to do with folder "icons" exactly?

thanks for replying, firstly i meant to say thumbnails not icons.I have checked folder options and made sure that the box"remember view settings" is ticked.
basically i allocate a number to each music track to match the original album and place the thumbnails in number order, but when re visiting the folder the thumbnails are random.
many thanks

Here are some quick finds of other posts from the link below.
You might want to browse that link, plus I will keep an eye out for other points.
"XP only remembers 400 folder views by default. To have it remember more:
First download and install the fix to make xp "remember" more than 8000
folders.

"Open up any folder, set the View to what you prefer, make sure you've
selected Arrange By Name and that everything is applied to the window you're
currently viewing. Then click Tools > Folder Options > View, and click
"Like Current Folder". This will set every folder's view to the exact same
as the active folder. Also, make sure "Remember each folder's view
settings" (on this same page) is unchecked."
"You can set up the default for opening folders, but files depends on the
settings (if any) for the program you open them with.
For folders, open one in My Computer and set it up just as you want for
default. Include things like View as icons/details, selected details,
sort order, what toolbars, as well as size and placement. Then go to
its Tools - Folder Options - View and click Apply to All."
