Windows version, AIM version, Is this a new problem or has this been happening for a while now, have you installed any new hardware or software recently? We can't read minds

Did your problems start after the latest update?
Did you remove the old download before redownloading?
Perhaps remove the program completely & do a fresh install?

To make sure you deleted everything; first go to: start > search & type in aim & see what comes up.
Also go to : start > run & type in regedit -there check under both current user and local machine > software > AIM -delete what you find explicitly labelled AIM.
(Before changing the registry click "file" on the top tool bar and choose "export" and send to your documents. This will create a backup in case you need it.)

Reboot & then try a fresh install. If this doesn't work I would presume the problem lies within AOL.

Also: Are you running a firewall? Do you have SP2?

Well thanks jeff i am gonna try all of that right now.I did type in redigit into run b4 u told me and deleted aol and aim.i am gonna try the other things that u told me to.And i am hopping that it works.Real quick i wanna tell u that when my aim does shut off it brings up the lil arrow and the time glass with the sand in it!I am guessing by the time glass that it is something in the backround of the comp cuz it is seraching.I am gonna try those things and i will be sure to get back to you with my results. Thanks for all ur hope!!

If you are running a firewall you will need to set the settings to allow all activities for AIM. I have seen this issue before.

When you say you also deleted AOL in the registry; did you re-install AOL? (sorry if that's a stupid question )

    And what about SP2?

Did you have any problems with your previous version of AIM?

Well I looked and no you do not need AOL to use AIM

    AIM for Windows

Sounds to me like Norton's is running; you just don't get the updates that you would with a current subscription. Is there an icon in the task bar for Norton? Anyway you should shut it off during the re-installation attempt.

And just going back to the beginning: did you get any error messages when AIM crashed? You saw the hour glass; anything else?

Are you familiar with the Event Viewer? It is listed under Administrative Tools.
There you will find a list of Events or Errors that affect your machine. Maybe you'll see something related to this issue?
