Unhappy Help! DVD/CD Rewritable Drive Not Reading!!

Hi,im having problems with my DVD/CD Rewrite drive,it's stopped reading.
The story is:I bought a new graphics card, the GeForce FX 5500,fitted it into my PC,run the software cd and installed drivers.I used it for a while, but i had to uninstal GeForce drivers because i didn't uninstall my previous graphics card,so i uninstalled both drivers.I had printed the manual from GeForce software cd to follow the instructions,i booted up PC,set the BIOS settings following the XP settings section from the printed manual and then loged on.Now my drive tray opens, closes and the light is on,but it won't read anything and now the Drive D:/ icon has gone too.No D drive! So i can't install my graphics card drivers or anything! I have tryed unplugging drive and re-applying,then rebooting, even tryed my old drive, still nothing.
    Can anybody please help?

If you haven't done so already...
I would suggest that you have a look in the BIOS (PC on, probably press delete) and see if the drive is detected in there. This may give a clue as to if windows is causing the problems. Check that the drives appear etc and are not disabled.

Also what type of drive is it? Try (re)installing some drivers for the drive.

    I hope this helps

Hi Mike, thanks for your reply! The drive is a Sony DRU-810A,dual layer, double layer.Do you know which option in BIOS mode (main, advanced, power etc) may i possibly find my drive enable/disable? I did try installing my DVDCD drive software but unfortunatly i didn't read it.Thanks!

The BIOS varies from computer to computer. - I would probably expect to see the drive on the main page. Near to primary/secondary master. The drive will only be detected as a CD-ROM drive in the BIOS anyway so look for that. It will most likely appear in the BOOT section of the bios as well. Just have a look through the menus and see if anything should be different etc.

If the drive shows in the Device Manager

    Start/Run/ devmgmt.msc

Right click it and choose Uninstall then reboot.

XP should load the drivers it wants.
