Internet Properties Advanced Tab

Internet Properties Advanced Tab
Hi all
Recently I went to network my xbox with my PC after some time without it (moved out etc.) and noticed that the 'sharing' tab was missing and in the advanced tab it says:
Windows cannot display the properties of this connection. The Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) information might be corrupted. To correct this, use system restore...etc... If anyone would like me to carry on I will. I had a look on MS knowledge base and it says I may need to format! I have far to much to lose and not enough backup options for that, needless to say I would suffer a large (if not complete) personal file loss.
Now I don't know if this has anything to do with it but I used to network with my xbox (xbox live etc.) with no problems, I just enabled internet connection sharing in internet properties. Then I moved out and had to share a connection with another computer (I connected to the internet 'through' the other computer, I also experimented with networking the 2 machines and everything was fine and run ok. Then I moved again and I'm connecting to the internet straight from my machine again, I didn't change any settings or 'undo' any network settings I used the internet connection wizard and that was fine. Until I try and find the enable internet connection sharing check box that is. What can I do to get back these options without any file loss? While I'm at it how can I 'undo' the network settings I made at the other house? I noticed my computer still has the same name and uses the same shared folders and tries to look for the shared folders on the other machine I was networked with. Please ask if any more info is needed. Thanks.

Just tracing your error message I get the same page that you probably saw:
Error Message: The Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) Information Might Be Corrupted

You can reinstall XP without formatting:

Did you try System Restore?

I did try system restore to no avail, do you think it has something to do with my old network settings? Will a reinstall leave all my programs installed and files and folders in place? Because in the past system restore has put files I've changed or added since the restore point in a folder and renamed the files, also will this reinstall put all my settings back to default? i.e. I'd have to put my internet password in again etc. This would be better because then I know my old redundant network settings will have gone. Unless you know of a way to reset all network settings to default?
Thanks Jephree

Right I've read that and feel fairly confident I'm gonna do an upgrade reinstall with fingers crossed! I'll let you know how I get on.

Well I was going to do a repair install but seeing as I'm planning on buying a new hard drive thought it could wait till I had some vital extra backup space, searching around I came across another thread in another forum with someone with the exact same problem as me and the solution worked a charm! Quick, simple and a complete fix. So if anyone has a similar problem with thier WMI database and your advanced properties tab in internet options becomes corrupt try this:
Note copy this then disconnect from the internet (the following will disable windows security center)
Posted originally by Philip Nunn over at www.mcse.ms so kudos and thanks to him
- open a command window (start > cmd.exe)
- type "net stop winmgmt"
- type "cd %windir%\system32\wbem"
- type "ren repository repository.old" (or alternatively delete it)
Then try your operation again. It may take a minute or so to complete while
WMI rebuilds the database.
After typing that into a cmd window I restarted and everything was back to normal!
Thanks Peeps!
