I'm having the 'msvcr71.dll cannot be found' problem; however, there seems to be an additional issue, because I cannot download a replacement file.

but there seem to be java issues, as clicking on 'start download' doesn't work. I've enabled java in Internet Options; no change. Additionally, I can't use standard (as opposed to HTML) gmail and several other sites - such as Microsoft's Windows Update - don't work. Any ideas.

Is this a new problem? Were things working OK previously? Any new hardware and or software?

What happens at Windows Update? Any error message?

What is your version of .NET Framework? You can see this via Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.

The 'msvcr71.dll cannot be found' issue is often related to a corrupt .NET Framework.

You will find version 1.1 here:

The latest version is 2.0 but you will need the 1.1 first anyway.

If you already have it you might try uninstalling then reinstalling.
