OK, it started when we got a new computer which came with Windows Media Centre; I thought I would install it on our old computer too, which currently had XP Professional on.
I realise now, that this probably isn't supposed to be done, because of copyright etc. etc. but its done now.
The point is, is part way through installing Media Centre it says to restart the computer, I did this and after loading a setup thing, it ends up on the blue screen with white writing basically saying:
"A problem has been detected, windows must shut down to prevent damage to your computer" it the goes on to say I should run CHKDSK /f and also run virus detecting programs, I did both of these, (Norton 2006) but it didn't find anything or make a difference (I didn't think it would either).
I can get back onto the normal XP professional desktop, but only by quickly selecting it at the 'Select operating system' part way through the start up. I'm not in the slightest bid bothered about getting Media Centre on my computer now, I just want it to start up normally on Professional.
What it does is automatically select "MS Windows XP Pro Setup" from the options in the 'Select operating system' part way through the start up, and what I need it to do is select the top option, which is "MS Windows XP Pro"
Thanks for any help I get
